Lady Bucks lose to the Graham Lady Steers

Wed, 12/23/2020 - 5:00 am

The Lady Bucks lost their last pre-district game to the Lady Steers of Graham, 19-51. On paper, the teams looked reasonably similar, with the Lady Steers having a (3-7) overall record and the Lady Bucks with a (3-6) overall record.

The contest began slowly for both teams with the score 2-9 at the end of the first quarter. Zaea Ragle #23 made the only basket during the first quarter as both teams struggled to make a bucket. Camilia Palacios #15 got a steal that led to the Ragle bucket.

In the second quarter, the Lady Steers took off and scored at will, while the Lady Bucks accumulated foul shots and Jimena Palacios #25 made a three-pointer well into the quarter, which got the half-time score to 9-18. Foul shots were made by Ragle, Emily Welch #1, Aimee Toliver #2 and Kylee Willis #21.

In the third quarter, Nayeli Hernandez #5 made her two points in foul shots as did Willis and a foul shot from newcomer, Jady Gonzales #12 and one from Toliver, to make the score 15-27 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Steers were contained by the Lady Bucks defense to limit them to only nine points that quarter as they did in the first and second quarters.

As the two teams began the fourth quarter, the score was 15-27. The Lady Steers lowered the hammer and scored at will with some questionable fouls called or not called at one end of the floor while the same infraction was called at the other end. In that melee of discussions, the Breckenridge Head Coach Bryan Goehring was charged with a technical, which was later clarified as against the Breckenridge bench and not specifically the coach.

The game ended with the Lady Steers winning 19-51, with the Lady Bucks only scoring four points that fourth quarter. Toliver scored a bucket and a foul shot and Gonzales got a foul shot as the newcomer to the Lady Bucks varsity bench. Additionally, Liberty Vandergriff joined the Lady Bucks varsity bench.
