The Breckenridge Lady Bucks opened up their regular-season schedule with a win over the Abilene High Lady Eagles, 39-36.
The game occurred Saturday, Nov. 8, as the Lady Bucks went on the road and gutted out the season-opening win.
The scoring started with a free throw from Ra’Shey Losh and Paisley Thibodeaux added another two points with a putback shot in the paint. Following a made free throw and a timeout, the Lady Eagles tied the score at three with a steal and a fast break layup from Mackenzie Baker.
The scoring would continue to go back-and-forth in the opening quarter and the Lady Bucks held an 8-6 lead. Thibodeaux recorded another putback shot to take the 6-4 lead and Kyra Canada added two from the charity stripe.
The second quarter got started with Abilene High tying the score back up at 8-8 with free throws, before the Lady Bucks were able to muster two straight buckets.
The Lady Eagles cut their deficit down to 14-13 a few minutes later when Baker knocked down a three-pointer. Analia Palacios hit one of two free throws before Baker hit both of her free throws to tie the score at 15.
Palacios then hit a three-pointer of her own from the right corner to take back the lead for Breckenridge, and two free throws from LaKyla Bartley put the lead out to 20-15 at halftime.
There were times in the second half that the Lady Bucks looked like they were going to allow the Lady Eagles to take control of the game, but they never wavered.
Following steals and fast break opportunities, Abilene High got the game back to within a point at 20-19. Bartley then banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key. Foul shots were key to keeping the Lady Eagles in the game, with Baker leading the offensive attack.
With the minutes ticking down in the third quarter, Baker turned a steal into a fastbreak layup and the game was again tied, 26-all. Two free throws from Thibodeaux and a layup from Victoria Martinez – assisted by Canada- had the Lady Bucks lead at 30-27.
The Lady Eagles would end up taking their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter, at 34-33, when Baker hit a three and was fouled. The Lady Bucks got the lead right back on their own layup and one from Canada, after they fought for a number of boards.
Losh got a steal and knocked down a mid-range jumpshot to extend the lead to 39-34 with 1:34 remaining. The Lady Eagles hit a layup with time ticking down quickly, but were unable to score anymore after that.
The Lady Bucks will have their home opener at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 as they host the Gordon Lady Longhorns.
