Lady Bucks prevail over Benjamin 3-1

Wed, 09/02/2020 - 5:00 am

The Lady Bucks played a superb match against the Benjamin Lady Mustangs before the home crowd for the first time this season Friday, Aug. 24 by only dropping one set for the win 25-23, 25- 20,13-25 and 25-19.

The Lady Bucks came out and battled to a close call in the first set and escaped with a 25-23 win. Even though the Lady Bucks had to battle through the second set, they came out with a more convincing win with a 25-20 score. After battling so hard in the first two sets, the Lady Bucks displayed a big let down in the third set and lost it 13-25. However, the Lady Bucks came back blazing on all cylinders to take the fourth set 25-19 and sewed-up the match in a 3-1 win. Jesi Warren was named the Player of the Match against the Benjamin Lady Bearcats, the second time this season she has collected that honor.

The Benjamin win places the Lady Bucks in third place in District 7-3A standings with a 3-2 record. In this match, Warren led the team with 11 Kills, 4 Aces, 6 Blocks and 23 Digs. Lilly Woodward contributed 11 blocks, 4 were solo, followed by Kerstyn Kelly with 7 Blocks and Warren with 6. Haigen Thompson followed Warren with 16 digs and Abby Parker had 9. Camilla Palacios led the team with 10 assists. Kylee Willis led the team with 14 service receptions, followed by Thompson with 8 and Reigen Robertson with 6. As a team against the Benjamin Lady Mustangs, the Lady Bucks had 31 Kills, 12 Aces, 25 Blocks, 76 Digs and 10 Assists, with 2 Ball Handling Errors.

The Bowie Lady Jackrabbits are at the top of District 7-3A standings with a 2-0 record followed by the Lady Mustangs of Wichita Falls City View with a 2-1 record. These are all non-conference matches prior to starting District 7-3A play for the Lady Bucks on Tuesday, Sept. 8, when the Lady Bucks travel to Henrietta for their first District game. The Lady Bearcats are nipping at our heels with a 5-4 record.

The Lady Bucks will play the Hirschi Lady Huskies Tuesday, Aug. 25 on the home court with our Buckaroo fans to cheer them on. The Lady Huskies have a 2-4 record and recently lost to the Jacksboro Lady Tigers, who are in our District 7-3A.

Breckenridge and Jacksboro players fill out the stats in all areas for District 7-3A. For example, in the Hits category, Lilly Woodward is first, Jesi Warren is second and then the next few positions are Jacksboro gals until position number six with Kerstyn Kelly and then a drop to ninth place for Kylee Willis. In the category of Aces in District 7-3A, Jimena Palacios is second and Warren is third with the rest of the slots filled by Jacksboro gals. Lilly Woodward leads in Blocks followed by Kelly 2nd, Warren 3rd, Kylee Willis 4th Haylie Mendoza 5th and Abby Parker 7th. The rest of the slots are filled by Jacksboro ladies. In the Digs category, the Lady Bucks fill all the slots except the 6th, 11th, 12th. Warren is 1st, Haigen Thompson is 2nd, Parker is 3rd, Woodward is 4th followed by Reigen Robertson at 5th. The 6th place is a Jacksboro gal followed by Haylie Mendoza at 7th, Alexia Saucedo is 8th, Jimena Palacios is 9th, Kelly is 10th and Camilla Palacios is 13th, with the rest filled by ladies from Jacksboro. In the Assists category, the Lady Bucks only have one gal placed at the 2nd position, Camilla Palacios, with the rest of the slots filled by Jacksboro gals. In the Kills category, Warren is 1st, Woodward is 2nd and then a few slots filled by Jacksboro gals until Willis at 6th, Kelly 8th and Mendoza at 11th. Once again, the other slots in this category are filled by Jacksboro ladies.

Possibly, it could be that Breckenridge and Jacksboro are the only two schools that have sent in stats

for the non-district games. All that aside, the Lady Bucks have a good standing in all categories in their District 7-3A, except for the Assists category, with only Camilla Palacios at 2nd place. The other categories that the Lady Bucks demonstrate a shortfall are Aces, with only Jimena Palacios and Warren placing in the top 10 slots.

It will be interesting to see how the Lady Bucks show-up when the other teams in District 7-3A send in their stats for all the categories which include Hits, Aces, Blocks, Digs, Assists and Kills. If others want to follow the categories one can go to Max Prep for Texas, Region I and District 7-3A.

The schools in our District 7-3A include Henrietta, Jacksboro, Wichita Falls City View, Nocona, Holliday, Bowie and Breckenridge.

The Lady Bucks pulled off the win against the Hirschi Lady Huskies on the home court, in three sets, 25-9, 27-25 and 25- 16. As you can see by the score, the Lady Bucks won the first set handily 25-9 but got all tied up at 14-14 in the second set and had to fight for the win at 27-25. The third set was a battle all the way with the Lady Huskies tying at 12-12. This time the Lady Bucks got their act together and fired forward and led at 21-14 and then winning the third set at 25-16 to win the match. Congrats to the Lady Bucks and their coaches who kept encouraging them all the way. Remember, this is a very young team with only three seniors and only one with varsity experience in Kylee Willis. There are five juniors led by Lilly Woodward, who is a girl to be reckoned with and also had varsity experience. Jesi Warren, a sophomore, who played on the varsity last year as a freshman, has been named the outstanding player in two matches already this season and demonstrates her impact on the game by leading the other two sophomores. Another junior, Kerstyn Kelly, is learning to use her height more at the net and adds to the Lady Bucks attack and defense. The lone freshman, Haylie Mendoza is also demonstrating her contributions to the wins.

Next, the Lady Bucks will play another Saturday match with Hawley and then another dual match against Clyde and Paradise Tuesday, Sept. 1, on the home court. That match is followed by the final tuneup against Iowa Park before the Lady Bucks play their first District 7-3A match against Henrietta on Sept. 8, at Henrietta.
