If you have not been following the Breckenridge Lady Bucks Varsity basketball this season, it might be time to get involved and cheer the Ladies on. Home games are played at the BISD Athletic and Fine Arts Facility when there is a home game. The Lady Bucks have been put the hammer down in the last two games.

Last Friday, the Lady Bucks played a thriller at Peaster, which ranked number one in District 7-3A. The Lady Bucks were able to knock them off 47-41. Unfortunately for Peaster, the Lady Greyhounds have now lost three in a row and slipped to second place behind Jacksboro at No. 1, Brock at No. 2, Peaster at No. 3 and Breckenridge at No. 4.

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, the Lady Bucks played the Tolar Lady Rattlers at home in another thriller and beat them 54-41. The Lady Bucks JV Green also beat the Tolar JV, 42-14.

The Lady Bucks started with two points from Kylee Willis (22), at 7:23 in the first quarter. Her basket was followed by an Alyssa Reyes (5) rebound and a Morgan Hash (2) attempt at a basket but no points. Carly Tennison (15) swooped in and made it, 4-0, with 5:25 in the quarter. At that point, the Tolar Lady Rattlers had been kept away from their basket very efficiently by our defensive stance in a 2-1-2 configuration that shifted very effectively against their opponent. Reyes was great on the rebounds and everyone appeared very adept at stealing the opponents ball. Finally, at 3:37 in the first quarter, the Lady Rattlers made their first basket and it was 4-2, with Tennison adding a foul shot to make it 5-2 and then the Rattlers let loose with a scoring barrage of four buckets that took the score to 5-10. The first quarter ended. The Lady Bucks defense had collapsed and they had gone cold at the basket.

Finally, into the second quarter, Willis made a basket and Reyes got a steal and fed the ball to Tennison for another quick basket and with 5:56, the score was now 9-10. Aaliyah Lawson (24) managed to get a rebound and fed the ball to Reyes for two points plus a foul shot. That was followed by a Rattler basket and then a steal by Willis, who fed the ball to Tennison who was fouled and she added two more points at the charity stripe. The score was now 14-12 with 3:52 in the second quarter.

Willis got a steal and shot the ball but it rimmed out, with Mariah Baladez (12) grabbing the rebound and put in her own bucket for two points and the score was 16-12. Once again the defensive configuration was working and the Lady Bucks were able to keep the Lady Rattlers from making their own baskets from 4:20 of the second quarter and it was now 2:48 of the second quarter. Stanley got loose to plop in one of her three-pointers and the Lady Bucks jumped to 19-14, when the Rattlers finally made one of their own. Stanley quickly added another two points and at the half, the score was held at 21-14.

The second half began with Stanley grabbing two baskets back to back and the Rattlers added two buckets of their own to make it, 25-18, with 5:14 in the third quarter. Once again the Lady Bucks went cold at the basket, which affected the defensive end, giving the Rattlers a chance at some baskets. Before one knew it, it was 25-22. The Lady Bucks added a basket and then another to make it 29-24. Both had foul shots added and by 3:29 left in the third quarter, it was 30-25. The Rattlers made two three-pointers back to back and the Lady Bucks added a bucket. Then Baladez plopped in a three-pointer and at the end of the third quarter it was 35-31. During this period, Alexis Navarro (35) made her very first basket of the game coming off the bench.

Baladez began the fourth quarter with two quick buckets to become the hot hand for Lady Bucks. Tennison quickly added another basket and got two foul shots which she sank very convincingly with a swish and the score went to 43-36. Bailee Young (21) got into the scoring column once again with her bucket, Stanley added a basket and Tennison added a two foul shots. Willis added a foul shot. After that, Tennison put in a bucket and Hash added a foul shot. The final score was 54-41 and a big win for the Lady Bucks, who are now 6-4 in the district and 16-12 overall.

The Lady Bucks play the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets there Friday, Jan. 25 and are home against the Millsap Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Then, on Friday, Feb. 1, the Lady Bucks go to play the Paradise Panthers.

The last game of the regular season is at home against the Brock Lady Eagles on Tuesday, Feb. 5. This will be an important game for the Lady Bucks because Brock is currently ranked No. 2, with an 8-2 record.
