Lady Bucks XC take fourth at Glen Rose

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 3:01 pm

Despite facing much larger schools, the Breckenridge High School girls cross country team finished fourth at the Glen Rose Invitational while the boys finished 11th.

The Lady Buckaroos took fourth after junior Mawnika Wright and freshman Riegan Robertson finished just seconds apart at 14th (12:56) and 15th (13:01) respectively.

Robertson and Wright each shaved a few seconds from their times at the Perkins Scout Camp Cross Country Classic in Burkburnett.

Considering her squad faced off against 6A programs, Coach Kim Dieterich said she was impressed with her runners and Glen Rose was only the beginning.

“We have our No. 3 runner still out … She didn’t run and we had a little gap, but that will gap would have moved us up to third,” Dieterich said. “We feel really good about them, especially with the competition we had.”

The boys did not fair as well as their female counterparts, but did show progress with freshman Evan Moore (28th, 18:04) and junior Lane McNett (49th, 18:57) each improving from their times at Burkburnett.

“Their mile times are better and their total times were better so we’re very, very proud of them,” Dieterich said.

While Glen Rose and the Perkins Scout Camp races each had their challenges, Dieterich said her runners will face their toughest challenge yet Wednesday at the Hico Bluebonnet Invitataional.

“It’s a tough course, lots of hills,” Dieterich said. “The finish is uphill. Usually, you finish flat in the shoot to the finish line. With this one, you finish up hill to the finish line. This is the one out of the whole season they dread because it’s one of the hardest ones until regionals.”

First start for the Hico Bluebonnet Invitational is set for 3 p.m.
