Sports review for 2020

January 2020

Bucks beat Coleman 78-51 during the winter break. This was a warmup for District 7 play starting Jan. 3. The Bucks also competed in the Eula Holiday Classic and placed second. Bucks string three district wins together with Aaryn Medina the lead scorer in the victory over Millsap, 72-57. Others who helped lead the scoring included seniors, Levi Lechner, Owen Woodward, Jonas Arellano and Gerardo Palacios.

The undefeated Bucks, with a 4-0 District 7 record clashed with the undefeated Brock Eagles and lost 47-65. Later, the Bucks recovered sufficiently to beat the Jacksboro Tigers 71-49.

The Lady Bucks defeated the Lady Horns of Early in a close matchup, 53-48, in a non-district tune-up game before starting District 7 contests. The first District 7-3A game was slated for a home matchup on Jan. 10, against the Millsap Lady Bulldogs, where the Lady Bucks hammered out a 41-24 victory, with Maria Baladez leading the scoring with help from Kylee Willis, and Lexi Shield and others.

The Lady Bucks, with a 3-3 District 7-3A record fell to the undefeated Lady Eagles 29-55. The Lady Eagles are now 7-0 in District 7-3A. The Brock Lady Eagles were ranked 10th in the state in 3A basketball.

February 2020

Bucks beat Boyd Yellowjackets 48-38 and Lady Bucks edge out the Lady Yellowjackets 58-56, for their 20th win of the season.

Boyce ‘Boone’ Magness was to be inducted into the 19th annual Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame at the Abilene Convention Center which was delayed until August. Magness was part of the 1929 3A Co-Championship Football team tied with Port Arthur 0-0. Magness helped the Bucks as a ‘triple threat’ to win the championship. In 1968, Magness was in the first class of inductees into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Four of his brothers also played with him and they included Betis (Bull), Aubrey, Maurice (Moko) and James (Cotton). Later, his mother, Mrs. Roxy Magness, received a trophy at a Buckaroo game with the names of her five sons and the years they played at Breckenridge for the Buckaroos. Boyce Magness passed away on Dec. 5, 1992, at the age of 80, in Los Angeles, California.

March 2020

Coach Casey Hubble announced he was leaving the Bucks after six years at the helm and a 29-40 record. He will be the Head Coach at Canton.

Bucks rout the Paradise Panthers 88-51, to clinch a playoff spot. They attained a 23-5 record for the season with Head Coach Colby Hartfield.

Lady Bucks defeated the Lady Panthers of Paradise, 48-40. The Lady Bucks were eliminated for a playoff spot when Tolar beat Jacksboro.

Bucks caged the Jacksboro Tigers 71-41 on Senior Night. The seven seniors included Gerardo Palacios, Jake Escalon, Owen Woodward, Aaryn Medina, Kyle Canada, Tristan Garcia and Levi Lechner.

District re-alignment for football from District. 7-3A to Dist. 3-3A. The Bucks and Lady Bucks will remain in District. 7 for Basketball and volleyball with new teams to include Bowie, Henrietta, Holliday, Nocona and City View of Wichita Falls. Dirt. 3 will include Clyde, Early, Tuscola (Jim Ned), Wall and the Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLCA) at San Angelo.

Bucks lose to City View (WF) 64-73 in a nail-biter playoff game after winning 24 games with seven seniors.

April 2020

Native son, Casey Pearce, to return to take the helm as Head Football Coach/AD for the Bucks. Pearce graduated in 1993. Pearce won the 2019 Broyles Award for the State of Texas and was named Howard Payne Univ. Sports Alumni Coach of the Year.

The UIL suspends all interscholastic competition from March 16 to March 29 due to COVID-19 outbreaks. Also, Spring football was suspended.

UIL extends suspension to May 4. Later, all contests were canceled for the rest of the year with no playoffs.

Several Buckaroo seniors get recognition for their playing expertise. Aaryn Medina received three Most Valuable Player (MVP) Honors, which included District 7-3A Offensive MVP, Big Country Offensive MVP, All-Big Country 3A MVP. Kyle Canada received recognition on the 2nd Team All-District and on the Big Country Preps All-Gym Rat Team. Jonas Arellano received 1st Team All-District and

All-Big Country Honorable Mention. Gerardo Palacios received 1st Team All-District and All-Big Country 2nd Team honors. Owen Woodward received 2nd Team All-District honors.

May 2020

Senior Justin Bell signed to play baseball for the University of the Southwest Mustangs in Hobbs, N.M. Head Baseball Coach Kevin Bartley has had great success in placing several of his 2019 and 2020 Buckaroo Baseball team players in college baseball programs. Among those players is Jake Escalon, who signed to play at Tarleton State University back in November of 2019.

Buckaroo Sports Camps were announced to take place during the summer of 2020 for baseball, football and Lady Buck volleyball. Dates were announced accordingly.

Madison Stanley signed to play volleyball at Howard Payne University. Stanley was a threesport student/athlete and chose to play volleyball after a season-ending ACL tear. She had had two shoulder surgeries and an ACL operation while in high school at BHS.

Aaryn Medina signed to play basketball for the Howard Payne Yellowjackets. He averaged 23 points a game, nearly seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

June 2020

Parents and alumni hosted a double-header for the Buckaroo baseball team to end the season on a positive note after the COVID-19 pandemic ended their season before it even began. The Bucks beat the 5A Aledo Bearcats 4-0 in the first game and 7-5 in the second game. Starting pitcher Justin Bell had a shut-out for five innings with zero runs. The doubleheader was played at the newly renovated D.D. Woodward Stadium on Dee Escalon Field. Meanwhile, Jake Escalon, the Buckaroo catcher, won the home run derby.

Head Football Coach Casey Pearce led the Buckaroo football players at the start of the summer strength and conditioning program for ninth through twelfth grade.
