UIL suspends all competition

Tue, 03/17/2020 - 9:17 am

In an effort to support the health and safety of students and communities, the UIL announced Friday it is suspending all UIL interscholastic competition from March 16 until March 29 due to the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

“We are urging our member schools and their communities to stay vigilant and take every possible precaution to remain safe and healthy,” wrote UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt in a press release on March 13. “We understand there is a lot of uncertainty during this unprecedented time. Please know UIL leadership is working diligently to adjust to this rapidly evolving situation and will share updates as soon as possible.”

Competitions affected in Breckenridge include the cancellation all BHS Buckaroo baseball and Lady Buckaroo softball games, as well as any other UIL-sanctioned extracurricular activities.

The move comes after the CDC announced its recommendations “for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.”

Information on this announcement can be found at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/mass-gathering…

In a press release by the UIL, the organization said the situation is fluid and they will continue to follow the direction of state and local officials in monitoring the situation.

On Monday, the UIL released an update stating, “the UIL is extending its suspension of all UIL sanctioned contests to include all rehearsals, practices and workouts.”

In an effort to clarify the update, the UIL released another statement saying, “At this time, all rehearsals, practices and workouts conducted outside the school day, as well as spring football, are postponed until March 29. This means that no rehearsals, practices or workouts outside the school day can be conducted.”
