WOODSON — It’s not often you shoot 22% from the field in a game and win.

Such was the case for Bryson’s girls basketball team Friday night, Jan. 24, as the Bryson Cowgirls overcame a double-digit deficit at halftime and turned it around with a third quarter with a comeback. The visitors ended the first round of district play with a 42-28 victory over the host Woodson Cowgirls.

Bryson was plagued by poor rebounding in the first half but their defense allowed just one Woodson shot in the first three minutes. Taryn Hearne gave Woodson a 4-3 lead before Bryson’s Riley Valliant put the visitors up 5-4 on the ensuing possession.

Bryson would miss their last seven shots from the field, enabling Woodson to use buckets by Hanna Miller, Anson Franklin and a 3-pointer by Lainey Townsley to give Woodson a 12-7 lead after one.

Woodson would lead by as many as nine early in the second as Bryson suffered from lackadaisical play to the frustration of Head Coach Rusty Jones. Bryson was nailed for two charging calls early in the second and Woodson was able to hold Bryson to one shot a possession with good rebounding.

Bryson missed all 18 shots in the second stanza, a Macie Jones free throw the only offense for Bryson. Woodson, which shot 50% in the first half, used baskets from Ariana Priddy, Teague, and Franklin to extend their lead into double figures, 18-8, at the half.
