XC runners perform well in district tune-up

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 3:25 pm

GRAHAM— The Breckenridge High School cross country team wrapped up the regular season with two runners placing in the top 10 of Monday’s Graham Cross Country Invitational.

Freshman runner Evan Moore finished first among all Breckenridge runners after taking fourth-place with a time of 18:38 and Moore seems in high spirits with the district meet a week away.

“I felt like I did really good, but we’re all just trying to get better for district and hopefully we will be where we need to be by then,” Moore said.

The Buckaroos finished fifth in the team standings despite having junior Lane McNett (15th, 19:41) and R.J. Campbell (16th, 19:42) posting top 20 finishes, but could not make up enough ground to crack the top three.

The Lady Buckaroos finished fifth after besting Graford by 88 points. Junior Mawnika Wright finished first among all Breckenridge runners and sixth in the competition with a time of 13:51, followed by Riegen Robertson (11th, 14:18) to round out the top 20.

Wright said an injury set her back slightly this season and Monday she looked to get back to her preseason form.

“I was trying to get back to where I was at the beginning of the season before district,” Wright said. “... I feel pretty good about it. I am working to get myself to state. I’ve made it to regionals two years in a row, but I haven’t gotten to state so I want to keep working hard.”
