UIL approves changes to playoff format

The playoff structures for multiple UIL sports will experience changes this year. The UIL recently approved playoff classifications for five sports to mirror football.

A proposal to restructure the playoffs for baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and softball was approved this month during the June meeting of the UIL Legislative Council.

Looking back at the 2023 Buckaroos football season

While practice does not officially start until later this summer, several athletes are participating in summer conditioning programs. 

Before looking ahead to the upcoming seasons, the Breckenridge American will look back at how Breckenridge High School teams fared in the 2023-2024 school year.

Confidence was high going into the 2023 Buckaroo football season. The Bucks were coming off an eight-win season in 2022 and had 15 seniors return to lead a reloaded roster.

Two youth summer camps remain

With baseball and basketball youth camps completed, Breckenridge High School has two more camps remaining this summer.

Lady Bucks Softball Camp takes place June 24-26 in three sessions at the Lady Bucks softball field.
Session one will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. for all incoming kindergarten through third grade students.

Gravitt to bring playoff experience to Lady Bucks volleyball

Two decades of coaching experience will be on the sidelines this season when the Lady Buckaroos’ volleyball season begins in August. 

Breckenridge ISD has officially hired Emily Gravitt to replace Krista Wilcox, who stepped down to take a coaching position at Comanche.

Gravitt’s head coaching career officially began at Petrolia in 2012 where she led the Lady Pirates to the playoffs in all four years. She has also held coaching positions at Iowa Park and Wichita Falls High School, which closed its doors following the 2023-2024 school year.

Lady Bucks’ softball camp set for end of June

With summer break in full swing, summer youth athletic camps have started to take place.

The 2024 Lady Buckaroo Softball Camp will be held June 24-26 at the Lady Bucks softball field. Each session will be led by the Lady Bucks softball coaching staff with help from current players. 

Campers will develop basic softball skills including fielding, throwing, hitting, bunting, base running and pitching.

The camp will be open for incoming kindergarten through ninth grade students.

Basketball, football camps upcoming

Breckenridge High School will host the Buckaroo basketball camp next week, with the annual Buckaroo football camp taking place in July at Buckaroo Stadium.

The 2024 Buckaroo Basketball Camp will take place June 3-5 at the BHS Athletics and Fine Arts Center.

Led by Buckaroos head coach Brent Lucas, the camp is open to boys and girls that will be going into first through ninth grades.

Five BHS athletes to compete in FCA All-Star Festival

With June approaching, Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes is gearing up for its annual FCA All-Star Festival.

Breckenridge High School will have five representatives in the all-star event which takes place in three big country cities.

Caiden Marin was also selected, but declined to participate on the advice of football coaches from Hardin Simmons University where he will play football in college.

Zaea Ragle was selected for the red team for volleyball and Alexis Franco was selected for the blue team for football.

Three BHS athletes sign to continue careers in college

A trio of Breckenridge High School athletes are preparing to participate in their sports at the collegiate level.

The three students signed their national letters of intent Wednesday, May 15 at Bailey Auditorium.

 

Lady Bucks center fielder Emma Williams signed her NLI to continue her softball career at Ranger College.

She is the second Lady Buck from this year’s team to sign to play in college, after Chloe Whitmire’s commitment to Dallas Christian College in February.

Baseball camp next week

With the school year nearing an end, Breckenridge High School coaches are beginning to announce this summer’s athletic camps. 

Buckaroos baseball will host its annual camp May 28-30 on Dee Escalon Field. Camp is open to incoming first through ninth graders.

Incoming first, second and third graders will participate from 8-9 a.m. at a cost of $25 per camper.

Incoming fourth, fifth and sixth graders can participate from 9:15-10:45 a.m.

Incoming seventh through ninth graders will go from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
