Rezoning of Elliott and Wheeler called off due to opposition

The project that calls for townhouses to be developed on a rezoned Elliott and Wheeler Street has been called off after almost two months of meetings and opposition.

Virgil Moore, executive director of the Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation, said developer David Stowe spoke with him on Tuesday, Dec. 11, and said he no longer wished to pursue the development project.

Stowe concurred saying the opposition was the primary motive for changing his mind.

City Commissioners meet, don't pass parking ordinance, receive updates on other business

The Breckenridge City Commissioners met Tuesday and did not approve a parking ordinance that would have made it illegal to park vehicles on unimproved surfaces. They also gave awards to city employees who have been with Breckenridge for an extended period of time.

On top of this, they tabled a public hearing regarding the rezoning of Wheeler and Elliott Street to allow for townhouses. They will have a new vote for it at the Planning and Zoning Commission next Thursday, which will determine if the P&Z board sends a recommendation to the city for approval.

City Commissioner's pass panhandling changes, gas rate increase, table item on parking

The Breckenridge City Commission met Tuesday afternoon and passed a variety of new ordinances, as well as a public hearing regarding the classification and definition of townhouses in the city. One ordinance passed also included raising gas rates.

Other ordinances passed included more strict regulation on panhandlers and peddlers within the city’s public spaces  Another dealt with parking, which would have created stricter rules on how and where residents were allowed to park their car. But after a resident voiced concerns, the item was eventually tabled.

Planning and Zoning holds contentious public hearing

The Breckenridge Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing last week regarding plans to rezone an area in the town that would allow the development of townhouses. The items were eventually tabled due to lack of clarification and will be moved to another day. The hearing at times was contentious, as over a dozen residents living in or near the area showed to protest and voice their concerns over the plan.
