Local woman finishes 112th at Berlin Marathon

While most of us are getting those extra hours of sleep on a Saturday morning, Barbara Medina, local Physician Assistant, is out running in preparation for her next marathon, which will be in London, April 26, 2020. Most in the community are not aware of her running marathons because she doesn't talk about it beyond, family, friends, co-workers and her patients, where she works with Dr. Prater.

Memories of WWII in 2019

The memories and pictures of World War II are beginning to fade, but for one local veteran, WWII will never be forgotten.

Zane Judkins, a 95-year old World War II veteran and Bronze Star Recipient, was drafted into the United States Army in Mineral Wells in 1943. “From there we were… they shipped us to Grenada, Mississippi,” said Judkins, “That is where I took my basic training — we stayed there and then went on maneuvers in Tennessee, and then after that, they transferred us to Fort Jackson, South Carolina.” 

History of Red Ribbon Week

What started as a non-profit in 1980 to encourage parents to begin to lead the way in drug prevention has now turned into a national week of drug prevention called Red Ribbon Week.

National Family Partnership, which was once known as the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, organized what is now known as Red Ribbon Week. NFP focuses on drug prevention in youth.

Sloan Everett Pure Country Pedal Memorial Bike Ride

More than 100 biles participated in the 3rd Annual Sloan Everett Memorial Bike Ride, named the Pure Country Pedal, on Saturday, Oct. 19. The ride was put on by the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce. There were 75 registered online to ride, with more than 25 registered that morning.

After a short word from three of the Everett girls, Catherine, Caroline and Sarah, the riders were on their way.

There were four options of rides, a 43-mile, 29-mile, 18-mile and a 7-mile family ride.

Breck Trade Days holds beans, cornbread contest

The Breckenridge Trade Barn had the sweet smell of cornbread and the savory smell of beans.

Breck Trade Days on Oct. 19, featured three contestants for their annual Homemade Beans and Cornbread contest. Andy McCuistion, Lisa Duggan, and Leslie Harrison put their cooking to the test as the community got to taste their renditions of beans and cornbread.

Breckenridge law enforcement, first responders reunion

Most police officers and first responders never forget their service and the people they served. 

For 17 former law enforcement officers and first responders from the 1970s and 1980s, Saturday, Sept. 22 was special. This group got together for the first time at the Breckenridge Law Center, composed of retired Breckenridge Police officers, Stephens County Sheriff's officers, Texas Rangers, Texas Highway Patrol, and paramedics that once served the Breckenridge area. There were a couple of people that still serve in law enforcement today. 

Woodson goes to 4-day week, sees improvement

When the 2019-2020 school year began the Woodson Independent School District started something a little different, a four-day school week.

WISD Superintendent Casey Adams has watched the new schedule take hold over the past six weeks, and at the six-week mark sent out a survey to the community, parents, students, and teachers. Adams wanted to know how everyone was liking the new schedule, whether the students were being pushed, and if it caused any problems for parents.

The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center begins a new exhibit, "History of the Common Man," by Tonya Holmes Shook. This painting, by Shook, is of a parade down the main street of Hastings, Okla., just two years after statehood. The occasion was the laying of the cornerstone at the new school. BFAC launches new exhibit

The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center is opening a new exhibit in the Main Gallery, "History of the Common Man," by Tonya Holmes Shook, from Monday, March 18 through Friday, May 3.

A reception to celebrate the artist was held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16 and was open to the public.

The artist draws strongly from her own heritage for her paintings and other art. She was born in Oklahoma, grew up in Tucumcari, New Mexico and has lived in Texas most of her adult life. As a result, she claims all three states as her home.
