Alvarado crowned homecoming queen

Last week’s homecoming festivities capped off with Surisadai Alvarado named homecoming queen at halftime of last Friday night’s homecoming game against Dublin.

Lauren Satterwhite, the Breckenridge High School 2016 homecoming queen, crowned Alvarado during a halftime ceremony that capped off a week of activities.

“I’m pretty surprised, but excited.” Alvarado said. “I was shocked and excited that my peers and classmates thought of me. I’m very appreciative.

New items on display at fine arts center

The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center has acquired a new festival dress and head-dress to be added to their permanent collection. The BFAC now has 30 very colorful festival dresses on display in that permanent exhibit.

The festival dresses in the BFAC collection represents the three festivals in Texas, which includes the Tyler Rose Festival, the San Antonio Fiesta Festival and the Corpus Christi Buccaneer Days.

Donors bring "Wonder" project to area kids

South Elementary ventured into a well-planned reading program for all students enrolled in fourth, fifth and sixth grade.

The book is “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio and is number one on the New York Times Bestseller List.

“The whole school will read for 30 minutes each morning during breakfast,” said Abby Moore, the South Elementary librarian who spearheaded the project.

Breckenridge High School Band prepares for school year

High school football boys and volleyball girls are not the only ones getting ready for two-a-day practices on Aug. 1 each year. 

While football and volleyball dominate much of the attention regarding extracurricular activities, the Breckenridge High School Band has already been practicing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. since July 24.

Breckenridge Fine Arts Center hosts camps

Instructor Debbie Malone conducted two student art camps from July 11 through July 14.

The morning class was conducted from 10:30 a.m. to noon and was set for children 7 years old and above.

That class worked with mixed media to draw, paint and sculpt art of their own design. They worked with watercolors, pastels, chalk, glass and clay. 

The morning students included Gabryel Moore, Mara Matheson, Aurrin Matheson, Leslee Abbott, Pretin Ezell, Providence Ezell and Taylor Champion.

Feed My Lambs meal program to continue

In 2010, the women of the First United Methodist Church in Breckenridge, known as WinGS (Women in God’s Service) identified a need in the community after BISD ends its free lunch program in June each year, particularly for elementary age kids who received those free lunches.  April Lechner picked up the program the first year. Initially, the WinGS group made 50 sack lunches and took them to the housing areas and handed them out to whoever wanted them.

Voter registration deadline is May 7

The last day for Breckenridge residents to register to vote in the May 7 special election to reauthorize a one-fourth of one-percent sales tax that is currently in place is Thursday, April 7. The sales tax was put in place to reduce the property tax rate. 
 

Student of the Fourth Six Weeks

Jaydn Cisneros was selected as the Breckenridge High School “Student of the Fourth Six Weeks” by the Chamber of Commerce. Cisneros, a senior at BHS, is the daughter of Rick and Christi Tidrow. She plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in Biology. At BHS, Cisneros participates in National Honor Society, Student Council, Football, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Junior Forum, Volleyball, Tennis, and TMCN Leadership.
 

Wedding Announcement

Mr. and Mrs. Gregory James Kos of Summerville, SC, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Haley Alison Kos, to Evan Taylor Maes, son of Lt. Col (ret) and Mrs. Patrick J Maes, also of Summerville. Mrs. Maes is the former Melanie Fore of Breckenridge. The wedding will be held Sunday, May 8th, at the Chapel at The Citadel., Charleston, SC.
