Stephens County going extra mile to protect vulnerable population

The Stephens County Courthouse is assisting the vulnerable population in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Individuals who are over the age of 65 or have underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, compromised immune systems, or cancer will have special accommodations to assist during the pandemic and into the future.

BISD board to omit Spring 2020 semester in GPA calculations

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Breckenridge ISD board of trustees approved an item to omit the Spring 2020 semester in grade-point calculations for the graduating classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The approval comes as the board of trustees met to discuss more details for the upcoming graduation ceremony, during a special board meeting Tuesday, May 19.

County, city to reopen businesses as state enters Phase II

Stephens County and Breckenridge will move into Phase II of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Open Texas plan to reopen businesses across the state.

“Businesses that will be able to reopen immediately include child care facilities, massage parlors and youth clubs,” Gov. Abbott said, during a press conference on Monday, May 18. “On Friday, May 22, several other businesses will be able to open at 25% capacity, including bars, bowling alleys, bingo halls and aquariums. On Friday, May 29, restaurants will be able to increase to 50% occupancy.

Veterans’ names added to courthouse memorial for Memorial Day celebration

Local members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary, along with Stephens County residents, gave their respects to those Stephens County Veterans who are deceased.

The ceremony occurred on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, on the Stephens County Courthouse Lawn.

The Veterans Service Officer provided names to be included on the list and confirmed that the veterans' name were correctly spelled.

The names were added to the monument for those veterans who passed away in 2019.

Special City Meeting rescheduled for Tuesday, May 26

Breckenridge City Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 at the National Theatre and will discuss various items such as the 2019-2020 budget to review shortfalls and consider departmental options to reduce expenditures and resolve 4th quarter deficit issues.

Fourth positive case of COVID-19 confirmed in Stephens County

Stephens County has confirmed its fourth positive case of COVID-19.

"This case was in the same household as the third case," according to Stephens County's Facebook post.

The third case was said to be travel-related and was reported on Tuesday, May 19. The county also reported that quarantine protocols are being followed and the patient is under the care of a local physician.

The case is the third case in two weeks and comes as Phase II of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's Open Texas plan goes into effect.

Stephens County confirms third positive COVID-19 case

Stephens County has confirmed the third positive case of COVID-19.

According to Stephens County, "the case is travel-related and the patient is doing better and is expected to fully recover. Quarantine protocols are being followed and the patient is under the care of a local physician."

The case is the second case in two weeks and comes as Phase II of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's Open Texas plan goes into effect.

The Breckenridge American will continue to monitor the situation.

Special meeting postponed

The Breckenridge City Commissioners special meeting scheduled for tonight (May 19) was postponed due to citizen concerns and issues with Zoom. The meeting has yet to be rescheduled.

The meeting was expected to consider actions on the current 2019/2020 budget regarding various departments, including Aging Services, animal welfare and the cemetery. The meeting was also expected to take action on opening the park.

United States Senator John Cornyn has requested the U.S. Treasury suspend or reduce federal royalty payments for oil, gas and coal to the U.S. Treasury. This request comes as the federal government looks to combat the decline in the oil and gas markets.

The oil and gas market continues to fluctuate around the country and create uneasiness among federal, state, county officials.

Rotary to host Battle of the Badges Blood Drive

Breckenridge Rotary Club will host the 4th annual Battle of the Badges blood drives Thursday, June 4 through Saturday, June 6.

The battle will feature a competition pitting the fire, police and sheriff’s departments against each other in a blood donation battle.
