Correction

In last week’s edition of the Breckenridge American, we released a story titled “Arrest made on alleged arson on CR216.” The fire in question, at 2953 CR216, is not being treated as an arson and was reportedly caused by an electrical short from an extension cord. In the story, we reported that Daniel Anthony West of Breckenridge was taken into custody for suspicion of arson for that fire.

McBride appointed, sworn in as new county constable

There is a new constable in town for Stephens County and he is a familiar face to the community and its first responders. A member of the Stephens County Sheriff’s Offi ce for over three years as a deputy, Brian Mc-Bride has been chosen to be appointed new constable by the Stephens County Commissioners Court last week.

Onto to the next journey

As they began their final journey, the Breckenridge High School Class of 2025 walked into the main gymnasium of the Athletic and Fine Arts Center, as the familiar graduation tune of “Pomp and Circumstance” played. Family, friends, teachers, coaches and board members rose out of their seats to give the graduates a warm reception, before they took their final steps to receive their diplomas.

Battle of the Badges blood drive next week

The ninth annual Breckenridge Battle of the Badges blood drive will take place next week, hosted by the Breckenridge Rotary Club. The event, scheduled for Thursday, June 5 and Friday, June 6, has a new participant this year with Sacred Cross EMS entering the fold.

183 North construction nearing completion

Crews contracted through the Texas Department of Transportation began laying pavement Monday, May 12 on US Highway 183 North as part of the final surface work to the road. With the weather hot and humid throughout the week, it was the dry conditions that were needed to get the work done and reopen the northbound lanes.

More information released on murder for hire case

Arrested by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Friday, May 2, on conspiracy to commit capital murder for hire charges, Jacob Wayne Spencer of Breckenridge is facing federal charges of “possession of a firearm with obliterated serial number” in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas Abilene Division.

City hires new Public Works Director

Following a nearly twomonth search, the city of Breckenridge officially introduced Kegan Burns as its new Public Works Director last week. He had been hired by the city two weeks prior to their Tuesday, May 6 meeting, in which he was introduced to the public.
