City pool to open next

The city of Breckenridge is preparing for some summer fun at the city park, as they get set to open the city pool, Saturday, May 24. The city commission approved the days and hours of operation for the aquatic center for the 2025 season at their regular meeting in April.

A major ongoing project in the city has been the improvement of the water lines, which new Public Works Director Kegan Burns noted is a focal point for what improvements he wants to see made in Breckenridge.

(Photo/Alex Kielar) The US 183 North Construction has faced several delays after originally beginning in 2020 and once having a scheduled completion date of 2022. Now, crews started one of the final steps as they began laying pavement in the left northbound lane Monday, May 12.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crews were out Monday, May 12 laying pavement on US Highway 183 North, also known as Breckenridge Avenue, as they near final surface work on the road to get the northbound lanes reopened.

(Photo / Google Maps) Jacob Wayne Spencer was transferred Monday, May 5 by DPS to the Taylor County Jail, where he will face federal charges of possesion of a firearm with obliterated serial number. Spencer was arrested by the Stephens County Sheriff's Office Friday, May 2 on charges of conspiracy to commit capital murder and solicitation of capital murder.

Murder for hire suspect transferred to Abilene on firearm charge

Jacob Wayne Spencer of Breckenridge, arrested Friday, May 2 by the Stephens County Sheriff's Office on charges of conspiracy to commit capital murder for hire, was transferred to the Taylor County Jail by the Texas Department of Public Safety - Criminal Investigation Division Monday, May 5. At the jail in Abilene, Spencer will face federal charges of "possession of a firearm with obliterated serial number."

County begins application process for new constable

Following an executive session, Stephens County Commissioners Court voted to start the formal process of receiving applications for county constable Monday, April 28. The position is vacant due to the death of the late Wayne McMullen, who held the position since 2021.

US 183 project on track for mid-May completion

Following the recent completion of the FM 3099 and US 180 intersection construction project in mid-April, another construction project in the city of Breckenridge is nearing completion. Frustration has continued to grow over the long-delayed US Highway 183 North construction project, which originally began in 2020 and was once scheduled for completion in 2022.

Fernandez, Huntington win city seats

Two new city commissioners will be sworn in, following the closing of Saturday’s polls. Voting in the two local elections concluded Saturday, May 3 as unofficial election results were released for the contested races for the Breckenridge City Commission and Stephens Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.
