Filing deadline this Friday

The filing window for local elections closes this Friday, Feb. 14 after opening Wednesday. Jan. 15. Eligible residents are open to run for a place on the Breckenridge City Commission, Breckenridge ISD and Stephens Memorial Hospital if they file to run by Friday.

Growing a passion in Texas

Moving from Pennsylvania to Texas, Alex Kielar has made an investment in the city of Breckenridge and his future as he works to cover the community with the Breckenridge American. Kielar graduated from Honesdale High School in Pennsylvania and later attended Lackawanna College where he graduated with a degree in sports management.

County approves purchase of SCSO truck

Utilizing Rural Law Enforcement Grants Senate Bill (SB22) funds, the Stephens County Commissioners Court approved the purchase of a new truck for the sheriff’s office. The department will be receiving a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado from Bayer Chevrolet for the amount of $49,974.53 after approval Monday, Jan.

West named Region 2-3A Assistant Coach of the Year

The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) announced the Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Regional Coaches of the Year for football last week, with a familiar face receiving honors. Breckenridge Buckaroos assistant coach Jeremy West was selected as Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in Region 2-3A.

City takes next step in CDBG process

Every two years, the application phases for the Texas Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program open up. The city of Breckenridge, which has received CDBG funding in the past, recently completed phase 2 of the 2025-26 application process — hearing community feedback.

Students at Breckenridge High School have been offered the opportunity to take a week-long field trip to Washington D.C. and New York City later this school year. So far, more than 25 students have signed up for the trip, costing each student $2,979, which they have raised through fundraising. Archive photo

BHS offering class trip for students

Students at Breckenridge High School will soon have the opportunity to take a class field trip as school faculty look for different ways to find educational opportunities outside of the classroom. An idea that was sparked by Theater Arts teacher Cassie Johnson, the field trip offered to all school district students, parents and faculty (chaperones) would commence later this school year and feature travel to Washington D.C.
