Commissioners approve ending agreement for bond officer

Stephens County Commissioners last Monday approved removing Stephens County from an interlocal agreement with Young County for a bond supervision officer and making it a local position. The county will continue to pay the current Young County Bond Supervisor, Cliff Blackstock, until the switch is completed for the position.

MSU announces fall honor students

Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls released a list of its fall honor students Wednesday, Dec. 22, which included three students from Breckenridge. The list included 1,036 honor students for the Fall 2021 semester.

The President’s Honor Roll included 369 students who completed 12 hours in one semester with no grade lower than a 4.0 or better, which included two from Breckenridge. The Provost Honor Roll included 302 students, one from Breckenridge, who completed 12 hours in one semester with a grade point average over 3.75 to 3.74 and no grade lower than a C.

BISD announces academic UIL results

Prairie Freeman, Breckenridge ISD’s Chief Learning Officer, announced the University Interscholastic League (UIL) academic results for BISD during the board’s meeting, held Monday, Dec. 13.

Students in second through eighth grades competed Friday, Dec. 3 at Bowie Junior High against both Bowie ISD and Jacksboro ISD students. Students competed in many different categories, which included chess puzzle, creative writing, mathematics, spelling, and many more.

Duty, honor, community

Breckenridge Fire Department Chief, Calvin Chaney, will retire in January after 30 years of service to the department and community. His last day in the position will be Jan. 7, 2022.

According to a BFD Facebook post, Chaney will be taking a new position with the Texas Commission of Fire Protection, beginning Jan. 10, 2022.

“I have worked here for 30 years, and this job offer came open with the State,” the post states. “I applied and was offered the job (Dec. 16).”

Teen killed in one-vehicle rollover

A teen died following a one-vehicle wreck which occurred early Tuesday morning approximately eight miles north of Breckenridge.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety release, at approximately 7:13 a.m., Brendin Granado, 19, was traveling north on FM 578 in a 2007 Jeep Liberty, when his vehicle partly entered the right barrow ditch.

The vehicle then struck a guardrail, before rolling over several times.

Granado, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS is currently investigating the crash.

BISD approves purchase of new bus, weight equipment

The Breckenridge ISD Board of Trustees in a regular meeting Monday, Dec. 13 voted to approve the purchase of new weight room equipment and a new bus.

The newly approved weight room equipment will be funded with Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. According to the Texas Association of School Administrators, the state received $1.3 billion in ESSER I funding, an additional $5.5 billion in ESSER II, and $12.4 billion in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds (also referred to as ESSER III).

WJHS OAP wins first place

Members of the Woodson Junior High School One Act Play came home from Tuesday’s District 21-A Contest with a 1st place win. The winning play, “Why Do We Laugh” was directed by Tacy Ellis.


Jack Sullivan was Best Performer; Chris Overton, Ian Jackson, Carson Bellah, and Jaycee Bordelon were named members of All-Star Cast; Breann Young was named to Honorable Mention All-Star Cast; and Colton Nelson was named Outstanding Light Technician.
