Veterans, Consider this a Red Poppy

Wed, 11/11/2020 - 5:00 am
The Woodson News

A red poppy. A symbol of our American and Allied service members since WWI. Poppy seeds came home with our soldiers after WWI to remind them of the transformation of the barren landscape that was before the “sudden growth” of red poppies among new graves.

On Veterans Day and Memorial Day, poppies are worn to honor members of the military.

If you listened to the words in “The Old Ragged Flag” as the horse was ridden around the football field at homecoming, it speaks of Flanders Field, which is where the poppies grew and became the symbol of sacrifice.

The 8th graders at Woodson are creating red poppies this year in their floral design class. They will be given to all of the elementary students with a note attached, that will hopefully teach them, and remind them, of the sacrifice of our military. Thank you, 8th graders!

Speaking of 8th graders, they will be performing “Once Upon a Playground” on Sunday, November 15, at 2 p.m. in the Old Gym. Y’all come out and watch! It’s free and fun! And, there will be dessert.

The FFA had their showcase in the Old Gym on Monday. They are having a lot of success with Leadership Development events, despite quite a bit of virtual competition! Go FFA LDE leaders! I am thankful for an energetic agriculture teacher! Thanks, Mrs. K!

Speaking of thankful and FFA, some of the Fresh Country orders came in on Tuesday, so if you had an order, you may get a delivery! Fruit won’t be in until December. Thank you for purchasing.

The Cowgirls played Rule on Tuesday in Rule. The junior high boys and girls basketball teams play at home on Friday, November 13th, at 5 and 6 p.m., respectfully. The high school girls play at 7:30 p.m. that day. The kids would be thankful, if you can get up to the New Gym and watch them play.

The FFA will host the District FFA Competition on Friday the 13th. Good luck to all! Thank you, again, to Mrs. K, for putting this together.

Continuing our month of thanks, I am thankful for each of the servicemen and servicewomen who have served and are currently serving in any branch of the military.

I am thankful for the right to pray for Amanda Adams, Mike Mickalson, Earlene Bellah, Travis Carpenter, Madison Yarger, Ray Lipps, Ron & Vicki Saddler, James Potts, Alene Forrest, Pam Butler, Thora & Paul Thurn, Misty Lawson, Jean Brockman, Dale Deaton, Sr., Treon Thompson, Ada Smith, Aletha Creech, Charlene Kite, Frankie & Minerva, Janice Devenport, June & Arliss Willingham, Py Brown, Greg Dunlap, Otis & Delorah Hibbitts, Jeannie & Johnny Stoker, Pam Allen, Barbara & LB, Carolyn Tate, the family of Steve Michaels, the family of Jefferson Luke Perry, and the family of Linda Dean.

Please include our country, our military and our leaders in your prayers. Thank you.

I am thankful for the beautiful weather, since our snow day, but we could still use rain!

Veterans Day is November 11, that is today. There is no special ceremony for veterans this year, but in Throckmorton, Fowler’s still fed veterans a free meal, after playing the Star Spangled Banner when they opened on Wednesday. Thank you, Fowlers.

Happy November Birthday to Burl Moses, Nanci Baxley, Mary O’Dell, Claire Ellis, Jennifer Mathiews, Jeff Mathiews, Margaret Mathiews, Mitchell Harris, Savanna Sullivan, Elwana and Jean, Lainey Townsley, and Brody Mathiews!

Happy Anniversary Month to David and Nanci Baxley!

The red poppy signifies remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. It shows support for our armed services. Like the freedoms we are guaranteed, wearing a poppy is a personal choice, representing experiences and memories of individuals. Thank you, Veterans; I am grateful.
