The Woodson News: Just Kids

Wed, 04/21/2021 - 5:00 am

They’re just kids. And yet, we enter them in contests…last week my high school students had up to six contests they participated in: area track, two FFA events, golf, regional one act play, and regional UIL, while they prepared for cheer tryouts this week, STAAR testing as it also began this week, and state FFA contests, as they are also this week. Not to mention the prom, which was held last Friday. And, the 4H horse judgers had their district meet. I reiterate: they are just kids.

Personally, I took students to Waxahachie to the regional meet for one-act-play and for regional UIL academic competition. We did not advance to state with the play or with any UIL event, but they competed with all they had.

Our thespians put on their best show yet! It was beautifully performed in the third slot, on the first day of competition. And, on the second day, after the judges had seen a total of 8 plays, our kids took home awards. Wesley Mills was All Star Cast; Taylor Crook and Kylie Deaton were Honorable Mention All Star Cast, and Tristan Nixon made the Honor Crew. Congratulations are in order for all cast and crew; it has been a wonderful run. Let’s get ‘em next year!

In UIL, Kylie Deaton placed 7th in persuasive extemporaneous speaking. Savanna Sullivan participated in feature writing, Wesley Mills in prose, Mercy Valentic in science, Ansynn Franklin and Kaedyn Nowell both participated in headline writing. Throckmorton did advance to state: Congratulations Caroline McCartney! Keep the dream alive!

Meanwhile, in the middle of UIL competition, we had the prom! The promgoers said it was beautiful, the food was good, and that they had a great time! The limo ride was fun and the dresses and girls were beautiful and guys were handsome! Thanks to all who put on this complicated event! The kids loved it.

The horse judgers won the district! Claire Ellis was high point individual, and Riggin Brents was third high individual. The team won the contest! All did well.

The FFA Homesite team are the Area Champions! Congrats to Wesley Mills, area CHAMP, Sam Mills, third individual, Gevin Beauchamp, and Ella Hearne! And the FFA Land team qualified for state in the second-place hole! Kacey Pate-4th, Myia Jackson-8th, Kylie Deaton 10th, and Emmari Munoz. Good luck at state!!

In golf, Nathan Malcuit heads to regionals after winning the other levels!

In track, several athletes advanced to the regional contest. Hanna Miller, Lainey Townsley, Arianna Priddy, Kylie Deaton, Tarynn Hearne, and Savanna Sullivan are headed to regional, as well as these young men: Adler Loftis, Austin Priddy, Austin Simmons, Hagen Anderson, and Justin Singleton. Go! Go! Go!

I am so very proud of all of our students. I am proud of my kids.

I am still singing to these April birthdays: Ada Smith! Joel Dyer! Danna Miller! Gary Sullivan! Johnny Vickers! Teddy Clark! Spencer Clark! Tobi Nowell! AJ Clark! Happy Birthday to you! And, many more!

Please pray for healing and health of Ada Smith, Hank Lawson, Danny Bellah, Alene Forrest, Aletha Creech, Resa Deaton, Burl Moses, Linda Northam, Thora and Paul Thurn, Pam Allen, Ray Lipps, Pig McWhorter, Earlene Bellah, Dale Deaton, Sr., June and Arliss, my Aunt Ruth Ann, Donice Neely, and Jay Gage.
