Buckaroos’ undefeated season continues

Wed, 10/12/2022 - 12:00 am

The seventh-ranked Breckenridge Buckaroos welcomed Iowa Park into the district with a 48-0 shutout victory over the Hawks Friday night at Hawk Stadium.

Chase Lehr opened the scoring with a 15yard pass to Adrian Ruiz in the second quarter and the Buckaroos never looked back. The Buckaroos finished the game with 397 yards of total offense, including 221 passing yards with a completion rate of 77%.

Lehr scored the first of four Buckaroos’ rushing touchdowns on an 18-yard quarterback keeper later in the quarter. He finished the game with 259 total yards of offense and three total touchdowns. Jerry Lawson led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 59 yards and one touchdown. Camden Escalon and Anson Rodgers added rushing touchdowns. Escalon caught three passes for 80 yards and one receiving touchdown in addition to his rushing touchdown.

Lane Castillo, Zeke Castillo and Caiden Marin led the defensive effort with all three players accumulating 11 tackles each. Lane Castillo and Marin each had three tackles for loss. Brilee Bernal had a fumble recovery for the Buckaroos to give the team a 1-0 edge over the Hawks in the turnover battle. Taking just one penalty and losing no yards, the Buckaroos played one of the most disciplined games they have played all season.

The Buckaroos (60, 1-0 district) continue their historic start to the season Friday when they travel to Vernon for a meeting with the Lions, who like the Hawks, dropped down to 3A Division I following re-classification and redistricting.

The Lions (4-2, 1-0) have already amassed as many wins this season as combined in the last three seasons. Playing at Clyde last week, the Lions opened district play with a 4228 win over the Bulldogs.

Losers of fourstraight games, the Hawks (1-5, 0-1) will look to end their losing skid Friday when the team travels to Bowie (0-6, 0-1).

With the district championship likely on the line, the Buckaroos will host Jim Ned on Friday, Oct. 21.
