Breckenridge High School sophomore Chance Stewart finished 55th overall today at the 2023 UIL State Championship in Round Rock. Stewart ran against 151 other runners in the race.

Competing as the lone representative for BHS, Stewart finished the 5,000-meter course at Old Settlers Park with a time of 14:27.4.

“He ran amazing,” BHS cross country coach Donny Funderburg said. “He’s just a sophomore getting his first experience at state. He’ll be back.”

Stewart had a fifth-place overall finish for the Buckaroos during the District 8-3A Championship race in Dublin on Oct. 9. The Buckaroos finished second overall in the team standings with 52 points.

The Buckaroos advanced out of the district meet to the 3A Region I Championship and competed Oct. 23 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. Stewart finished 15th overall at 17:27.8. He qualified for the State Championship by finishing in the top-10 of runners not on a state-qualifying team. The top two teams advanced to the state meet. The Buckaroos finished 10th overall out of 24 teams with 286 points.
