Mendoza, Townson named Athletes of the Week

The Breckenridge American announces Ryan Mendoza and Sayler Townson as this week’s Athletes of the Week.

This week’s athletes are recognized for performances in games and events which took place Sept. 2-7.

Following a week that saw Hayden Mendoza of Buckaroos football earn Athlete of the Week, Ryan Mendoza earns the recognition for the second week of the football season.

BHS XC runs in Brownwood

Breckenridge High School competed in its first full cross country meet of the season Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Brownwood Invitational.

The varsity boys team shined by finishing second out of 26 teams at the meet. Chance Stewart was the line medalist for BHS with his third place finish with a time of 16:46.

Ruthie Valdez led the varsity girls to a 17th-place finish out of 33 times. She finished the race in 53rd place with a time of 14:01.

Bucks shutout in season-opening loss

The Buckaroos were exposed. That was the main thought from Buckaroos coach Casey Pearce following his team’s 64-0 shutout loss at Holliday to open the 2024 season. 

The Buckaroos struggled to move the ball on offense while the offensive line struggled to contain the defensive line of the eighth-ranked Eagles.

On the offensive end of the ball, the Buckaroos were held to 11 first downs, including no trips inside the Holliday 20-yard line until late in the third quarter.

Malcuit, Mendoza named Athletes of the Week

The Breckenridge American announces Preslie Malcuit and Hayden Mendoza as this week’s Athletes of the Week.

This week’s athletes are recognized for performances in games and events which took place August 26-30, due to an early holiday deadline.

Following the Lady Bucks three-set sweet over Newcastle early in the week, Malcuit was voted by her teammates as the Fearless Focus Winner for her energy in the Tuesday, Aug. 27 match.

Lady Bucks struggle at WF Legacy, Lu Allen

Pre-district matches are always a busy time in sports such as volleyball — with regular matches on Tuesdays and weekend tournaments consisting of four or more matches in a two-day period.

Last week was no different for the Lady Bucks, who helped open Legacy High School with the first varsity matches in the school’s existence and finished Saturday, Aug. 24 with the Lu Allen Memorial Volleyball Tournament in Graham.

Lady Bucks go 2-3 to open season

The Lady Bucks opened the season with a home loss to Poolville and a weekend tournament at the Boomtown Classic 2024 Volleyball Tournament which took place Aug. 15-17.

The Lady Bucks, after dual matches against Iowa Park and Legacy High School in Wichita Falls will take part in the Lu Allen Memorial Volleyball Tournament this weekend in Graham.

Wall scrimmage to benefit THSCEF Our Day to Shine

When this week’s Buckaroos football scrimmage takes place, funds will be raised to benefit the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation’s benevolence fund.

Wall High School will visit the Buckaroos Thursday, Aug. 22 for the final scrimmage before next week’s season-opening game at Holliday.

All funds raised at the scrimmage will go to the fund which assists Texas high school athletes and coaches going through hardships.

BHS Cross Country opens season at Brock 6-Mile Relay

The cross country season began this weekend for the Buckaroos and Lady Buckaroos cross country teams. 

The teams competed Saturday, Aug. 10 in a unique type of cross country meet at the Brock 6-Mile Relay.

Breckenridge High School was represented by four teams of three runners. The boys’ team had two teams with Chance Stewart, Adrian Saucedo and Gabriel Garcia on Boys Team 1. Bodie Skiles, Carlos Alvarado and Kasen Ferguson competed on Boys Team 2.

Looking back at the 2024 BHS track and field season

The season took off with a fast start in March when BHS competed in the Tiger Relays in Jacksboro. 

The Buckaroos took first place in both varsity and junior varsity meets Wednesday, March 6. The Lady Bucks took fourth overall in varsity.

Individually, the Buckaroos earned four first-place event finishes. Karter Smalley took first in the 100-Meter Dash, Chance Stewart finished first in the 1600-Meter Run, Braye Cantrell won in 110-Meter Hurdles and Caiden Marin won the Shot Put event.
