Lady Bucks drop matches to Tolar, Eastland

The Lady Bucks entered the first full week of district play 1-0 after a three-set win at Comanche.

The team finished the week with a 1-2 records with a 3-0 home loss Tuesday, Sept. 17 against Tolar and a road 3-1 loss Friday, Sept. 20 at Eastland.

District 8-3A has proven it will be a difficult district to compete in with eight teams competing for four playoff positions.

Buckaroos shutout in loss at Eastland

A difficult season was more difficult Friday, Sept. 20 on the road in Eastland, the offense continued its early-season struggles to consistently moved the ball and was shutout in a 14-0 loss to the Mavericks.

The Mavericks’ slow and methodical pacing proved difficult for the Buckaroos, who struggled with turnovers and stringing together consecutive positive plays offensively.
From the first play from scrimmage, the Buckaroos both showed signs of promise and the same struggles the team has experienced throughout the non-district schedule.

Lady Bucks win district opener at Comanche

Fearless is how Lady Bucks volleyball coach Emily Gravitt said is how she wants to see her team play and that is what she saw out of her team in their 3-0 win Friday, Sept. 13 at Comanche.

The Maidens are led by a familiar face as former Lady Bucks coach Krista Wilcox has moved to Comanche along with players Destiny Jamison and Kaysi Wilcox.

Although the Lady Bucks won in a three-set sweep, the win did not come easy.

The Maidens took charge early with a six-point lead in the opening set, however the lead by the home team did not last long.

Buckaroos suffer road loss to Loboes

The Buckaroos football team showed some promise while also showing areas they needed to improve while falling to 0-3 on Friday, Sept. 13 at Cisco.

The offense found the end zone for the first time this season in a 30-20 road loss to the Loboes.

For nearly 10 quarters of football to open the 2024 season, the Bucks offense had been held out of the end zone.

Before Sawyer Wimberley broke free for a 60-yard touchdown with 5:32 left in the second quarter, the lone Bucks score of the season was with a kickoff return late in the team’s home loss to Childress.

Improvement was on display by runners both varsity teams.

With multiple rainy days ahead of the meet, coach Valeria Williams said runners succeeded in difficult conditions with personal bests achieved by multiple runners.

“Through a muddy and messy course, our varsity boys won the meet with multiple personal records,” Williams wrote. “Varsity girls placed second with (all runners achieving) PRs. ...(I am) beyond proud of how these athletes performed.”

Buckaroos lose in home-opener, 35-7

While the defense and special teams showed improvements over the Buckaroos’ season-opening loss, the offense remained stagnant in a 35-7 loss Friday, Sept. 6 at home against Childress.

Struggling to win battles on the line on offense, the Bucks could not move the ball well with both Zage Gravitt and Joseph Juneau splitting time at the quarterback position.

Held without a first down in the opening quarter, the Bucks offence did not earn a first down until a face-masking penalty against Childress early in the second quarter on the Bucks’ third drive of the game.
