Lady Bucks win first district title since 2001

The Breckenridge Lady Bucks celebrated their seniors in a big way Friday, April 19.

After honoring their six seniors, the team earned a district championship with a 10-0 win over the Lady Greyhounds. The championship sets the Lady Bucks up with a bi-district meeting with Iowa Park.

The bi-district playoff will take place with games one and two taking place April 25-26 at Hogan Field in Graham. Both games will start at 5 p.m. If necessary, game three will take place Saturday, April 27 at Hogan Field with a time to be determined.

Duran, Salazar named Athletes of the Week

The Breckenridge American announces Junior Duran and Charlie Salazar as this week’s athletes of the week. This week’s athletes are recognized for performances April 15-20.

Junior Duran
Duran is a four-year player on the Buckaroos baseball team, playing this year in center field.
In the Bucks’ win at Early, Duran recorded two hits including a triple. He had five putouts in center field during their win against Peaster.

BHS track competes in region track meet

Breckenridge High School was represented at the 3A Region I track meet that took place April 19 and 22 at Abilene Christian University. When the meet was complete Sawyer Wimberley and Braye Cantrell emerged as two Buckaroos that will represent BHS in the state meet taking place with 3A's events taking place Thursday, May 2. The girls' 4x400-meter relay team of Ruthie Valdez, Haylie Mendoza, Lane Bartoskewitz, Karsyn Smalley and alternate Sayler Townson will represent the Lady Bucks after advancing as a "wild card."

Lady Bucks lose playoff warm-up with walk-off

The Lady Buckaroos punched up a division as they prepared for this week’s bi-district playoff against Iowa Park. Visiting Graham, where they will play the Lady Hawks, the Lady Bucks lost 3-2 in walk-off fashion Monday, April 22.

The 4A Lady Blues welcomed the Lady Buckaroos in Graham for a warm-up game before the playoffs start for both teams this weekend. The two teams battled, giving each other their best and creating a playoff-like atmosphere, in which Graham walked off with a 3-2 win in the final inning.

Whitmire reaches milestone in Lady Bucks' win

In a rare home game on the road, the Lady Bucks had a night for the history books. Lady Bucks pitcher Chloe Whitmire recorded her 800th strikeout while the team took a big step in securing a district championship with a 10-4 win Tuesday, April 16 at Early.

Bucks earn third straight shutout win

The Buckaroos earned a 6-0 shutout victory Tuesday, April 16 in a playoff-type atmosphere at Early High School. Neither side was happy with the strike zone being called while players from both teams were getting chippy with each other.

Mendoza, Stewart named Athletes of the Week

The Breckenridge American announces Haylie Mendoza and Chance Stewart as this week’s athletes of the week.

This week’s athletes are recognized for performances April 11 at the area track meet.

Chance Stewart
Simply put, Chance Stewart did a lot of running on April 11. He competed and represented the Buckaroos in the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs at the area track meet. He advanced to this weekend’s regional meet with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run.

BHS track sends athletes to region meet

Breckenridge High School will be represented by 14 athletes this weekend in Abilene at the 3A Region 1 track meet.

These athletes advanced last week as top-four finishers in their respective events at the area track meet Thursday, April 11 at South Elementary.

The top two finishers in each event April 19-20 in Abilene will advance to the state meet May 2-4 in Austin.

Bucks, Lady Bucks sweep Dublin

Both the Lady Bucks and Buckaroos completed season sweeps over Dublin in baseball and softball.
The sweeps were completed with a pair of shutout victories Friday, April 12 in Breckenridge.

A fan watching the game from behind the center field wall proudly displayed a sign that said, “J Jackson Hits Bombs.” The sign proved to foreshadow the game, which included four home runs. Two of those his by Joni Jackson.

The Lady Bucks combined for 14 hits. Charlie Salazar and Carlee Stewart each added home runs of their own.

Bucks, Lady Bucks defeat Comanche

The Lady Bucks took a major step toward a district championship last week while the Buckaroos earned an important bounce-back win. Both teams earned wins Friday, April 5 in a sweep over Comanche.

Buckaroos Coach Jeremy West credited his team for its consistency in a six-run win over the Indians. Camden Escalon provided consistency as the starting pitcher, striking out 11 batters while giving up two hits.
