Hayworth retiring after 14 years

Jean Hayworth will leave a legacy of service to her country and the city of Breckenridge when she retires from the Breckenridge American today and moves on to the next chapter in her life.

At the age of 18, Hayworth enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and was discharged when her three-year enlistment ended Aug. 30, 1962. While in the military, she was in the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) program from Dec. 1, 1959, until she was discharged in August 1962.

The History of Fathers Day

On the third Sunday in June, every year, Fathers Day comes along. Everyone knows that this day is the day to celebrate their fathers or the father figures that they have had in their lives. However, not many people know how this day came to be a Federal holiday. One woman named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd launched a 62-year campaign in order to make Fathers Day a Federal holiday to honor her father.

Annual Spring Fling event promotes shopping local

The Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce sponsored the annual Spring Fling event again this year from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 26, to encourage Stephens County residents to shop at home instead of going out of town. Shopping local is not just a slogan, but rather an important part of every community's local economy. Surveys indicate every dollar invested locally gets circulated within the community at least seven times before leaving. Local businesses support non-profits, childrens' clubs and activities, civic groups, churches, schools and more.
