BISD board meets about closing campus

The Breckenridge Independent School District board of trustees presented the possibility of closing North Elementary, on Monday, Jan. 20 at the School Administration Office. The board considered the option as a way to help with accountability while creating a more efficient operation of district resources and facilities.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is currently writing rules to reconfigure campuses in districts around Texas. The reconfiguration is defined as Improvement Required, which Breckenridge ISD is in the first year of.

Search continues for Breckenridge ISD Superintendent

The Breckenridge ISD held a community involvement meeting for the search of a new superintendent during their School Board meeting on Monday, Jan. 13. During the meeting, the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) sent representative Rick Howard to discuss the leadership qualities desired by the community for a new superintendent.

Filing opens for upcoming local election

Candidates can begin filing for a place on the ballot for the May 2 uniform election which involves local political subdivisions. The first day to file was Wednesday, Jan 15, with the deadline set for Friday, Feb. 14.
The last day to register to vote in the May 2 election will be Thursday, April 2. Early voting will run Monday, April 20 through Tuesday, April 28. The last day to receive ballot by mail will be on election day at 7 p.m. if not postmarked, or Monday, May 4 at 5 p.m. if postmarked by 7 p.m. at the location of the election on election day.

A mail carriers journey

Ron White was in the first grade when his teacher asked him to collect the mail for the school. Along with another student, White would walk about four blocks to the mailroom to gather those documents.

With a pleasant experience from the postmaster, White recalls being fond of his carrier duties even at a young age.

At the Jan. 13 County Commissioner meeting, Ron White was honored for his 35 years of service to the Breckenridge community. As a U.S. Postal Service employee, White has been voted the most liked carrier for a record number of years.

Breckenridge honors retiring Chief Larry Mahan

The Breckenridge community came together in full force to celebrate the retirement of Police Chief Larry Mahan. Community leaders, government officials, family, and friends gathered on Friday, Jan. 17 inside the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center to celebrate his legacy.

Mahan served the community as police chief for 21 years and has protected county citizens for nearly 40 years.

Breckenridge ISD sets superintendent search schedule

Texas Association of School Board Executive Search Services was awarded the Breckenridge ISD Superintendent search contract and officially presented their timeline of events at the BISD Board meeting.

Butch Felkner of TASB/ESS spoke to the board about the timeline and calendar for the BISD Superintendent search. He stated that one of the first things the board and TASB will do is hold a live meeting along with a survey for people to put their input in for Superintendent search. 

Stephens County Sheriff removes his name from ballot

Just weeks after announcing his re-election campaign, Stephens County Sheriff Will Holt has removed himself from the Republican primary ballot, according to a press release.

Sheriff Holt stated in his announcement that this decision to not run for Sheriff again came after “an enormous amount of prayer, reasoning, and wrestling with myself and God over the last year and more.” He pointed out that when he will continue to serve out his full-term, but believes there is a better candidate for Sheriff.

Breckenridge City Commission pins dedicated employees

Business talk was not the highlight of Tuesday's City Commission meeting. Breckenridge department heads took the time to individuality congratulate each employee that has now gained a minimum of five years with the City of Breckenridge.

The first honoree has dedicated himself to the city's cemetery for twenty years, John Trigg was honored by Stacey Harrison. Trigg is the one responsible for the grounds being properly maintained to honor the loved ones memories and their families.
