Back to School Bash

In the third annual Back to School Bash put on by Stephens Memorial Hospital, incoming Buckaroos and Broncos were invited to the hospital’s cafeteria to receive a bag of important school supplies and snow cones as a refreshing treat Thursday, July 24.

(Photo/Alex Kielar) Friends of Historic Breckenridge recently announced the lineup for the 2025-2026 National Theatre Performance series, which will feature five bands and artists from across Texas, beginning Saturday, Sept. 20.

National Theatre announces 2025-26 performance series

The National Theater Performance Series is returning for another year, with the stage set for the next slate of performers to hit the stage.

The Friends of Historic Breckenridge, in conjunction with the National Theatre, has announced the lineup for the 2025-2026 performance series. The five acts were announced Friday, July 25 and all shows will be on Saturdays, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and performances beginning at 7 p.m.

Online ticket sales for all five shows begins Wednesday, Aug. 20, at friendsofhistoricbreckenridge.org.

Summer band camp gets underway

As the 2025-26 school year nears, the Breckenridge High School band has begun summer band camp to start preparations for the marching season.

Led by band directors Joe and Melissa Barrow in their second year at BISD, the Pride of Breckenridge Buckaroo Band had its first full band practice Tuesday night, July 22 in the band hall at the high school.

Breckenridge ISD prepares for new cellphone ban

As the start of classes approaches, Breckenridge ISD is preparing for the implementation of a statewide cell phone ban in Texas schools.

The law is not yet implemented for BISD, but it has been on the school board’s radar and they are waiting to hear back from legal, as to how to write the policy, according to Terri Collie, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent.

Boating accident on Hubbard Creek Lake results in fatality

A late-night fishing trip turned tragic early Saturday morning, July 19, when a boat crashed into Goat Island on Hubbard Creek Lake, resulting in the death of a Colorado City man, according to Game Warden Clifton Westbrook of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Stephens County explores options for emergency command center

As steps are taken towards improving emergency response, Stephens County will be looking into the prospect of building a larger emergency operations command center. The decision for the county to look into this was approved Monday, July 14, by the Stephens County Commissioners Court after Stephens County Emergency Management Coordinator David Leonard approached them about the topic.

Boating accident on Hubbard Creek Lake results in fatality

A late-night fishing trip turned tragic early Saturday morning, July 19, when a boat crashed into Goat Island on Hubbard Creek Lake, resulting in the death of a Colorado City man, according to Game Warden Clifton Westbrook of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).

Westbrook said that the man and his son were navigating across the lake after dark when they lost their bearings and struck the island’s shoreline. The impact caused severe damage to the front of the boat.
