Agencies, universities seek $24.6 billion in new funding

The Texas Senate’s chief budget writer said state agencies and higher education institutions have requested nearly $25 billion in funding as the legislative session gets underway. State Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, told The Dallas Morning News that the requests for new money reflect the growing functions and purposes of state agencies that serve the public.

Hospital foundation hosting fundraiser

The Stephens Memorial Hospital Foundation is looking to offset the cost of a new mammography machine for the hospital through its Winter Gala Masquerade Ball fundraiser. The event will be held from 5 p.m.

The city of Breckenridge and its public works department are working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to inventory the types of materials making up the water service lines within the city’s distribution system.

The youth of Breckenridge are gearing up to showcase their skills and animals during the 67th annual Stephens County Junior Livestock Show and Sale next week. The show will be held Jan 9-11 at the Stephens County Ag Barn at 145 County Road 245.

City provides winter fire safety tips

As winter comes into full swing, the city of Breckenridge shared some safety tips to follow while keeping warm this season. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, heating equipment is the third leading cause of home fire deaths behind smoking materials and cooking and accounts for more than 15% of all home fire deaths.
