Frontier Days to return in May

Spring has sprung and that means the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce is putting the finishing touches on its biggest event of the year.

Community members will have an opportunity to get a taste of the frontier when the chamber hosts the annual Stephens County Frontier Days, taking place May 3-4 at the sale barn next to Breckenridge City Park.

EDC provides update

New food and shopping options could be on the way to Breckenridge. Bringing in more options is part of a plan the Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation says will help Breckenridge grow.

The EDC recently worked with Retail Strategies to determine areas of growth potential in the city, including areas where the city is losing money to other communities.

Lady Bucks lift at THSWPA state meet

Breckenridge High School was represented by three Lady Bucks last week at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Championships.

Joni Jackson, Isabelle Biddison and Rylee Fuller. The 3A portion of the state championship took place Thursday, March 14 in Frisco.

The three Lady Bucks powerlifters earned their trips to the state championship by qualifying March 2 at Bells.
Biddison was the lone Lady Buck to officially record a total weight with Jackson bombing out and Fuller getting a disqualification.

WCTMWD closes two ramps on Hubbard Creek Reservoir

The West Central Texas Municipal Water District announced the closure of two ramps at Hubbard Creek Reservoir. Due to dropping water levels, the district announced the closures of Peeler’s Pier and Corley Ramp in a press release sent Friday, March 15.

According to the release, the Hubbard Creek Reservoir water level was at 1,171.27 feet.

The ramp at Paul Prater Landing near the dam is expected to remain open. Ramp closures due to the water level have not been a common occurrence.

The city of Breckenridge, in partnership with Stephens County, will be conducting a city-wide brush pickup beginning Monday, March 18.

City-wide brush pick-up next week, curbside deadline this weekend

Breckenridge community members will be able to have brush picked up next week, with the deadline to have brush curbside set for this weekend.

The city of Breckenridge, in partnership with Stephens County, will be conducting a city-wide brush pickup beginning Monday, March 18.

Residents are asked to place their brush place on their curb between Friday, March 15 and Sunday, March 17.
No brush larger than 8 inches in diameter will be picked up. Brush must be cut in lengths no longer than 6 feet long, and the butt ends must be placed toward the street or curb.

TMCN sees BHS juniors take on leadership project

A group of Breckenridge High School students are looking to leave their mark on downtown Breckenridge through a project in the Leadership TMCN program.

Miley Roberts, Joni Jackson, Tim Newell and Jack McKay are working with community leaders to build a community activity area in the downtown area.

The program, which is part of the Texas Midwest Community Network, partners high school juniors with mentors and community leaders to undertake a project in their community and compete to earn cash prizes that can be used towards college, trade school or to start a business.

Local courts enact bond rules

New bond requirements are now in place in Stephens County following an agreement between 90th Judicial District Judge Phillip Gregory, Stephens County Judge Michael Roach and Stephens County Justice of the Peace Steve Spoon.

Gregory said the rules align with the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Art. 17.40, and will help the courts move cases along at a quicker pace while allowing attorneys to serve their clients better.

County commissioners approve tax abatement for proposed wind farm

County commissioners approved Monday, March 11 a draft agreement with La Casa Wind, LLC for a tax abatement agreement regarding a proposed wind farm in Stephens County.

The agreement will allow La Casa an annual PILOT (Payment In Lieu of Taxes) payment of at least $445,051 for the 10-year abatement period. That payment amount is considered to be the floor amount.

The total amount owed each year will be the greater of 50% of all property taxes abated by the agreement or $445,051.

BHS One Act Play performs in zone competition

Breckenridge High School received several recognitions last week as it competed in a UIL One Act Play zone level competition Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Graham Memorial Auditorium.

Seven members of the BHS OAP group earned individual recognitions as the cast and crew of the OAP production Mrs. Packard advanced to the district competition.
