The city of Breckenridge held a public hearing for the proposed tax rate of $1.02 per $100 valuation Tuesday, Aug. 30, a rate which will raise more tax revenue than the previous year despite dropping from last year’s rate.
This week is a fourday week, followed by a four-day weekend, followed by another four-day week! Wow!
On Thursday of this week, I’m getting new windows. Just replacement windows, no combining smaller windows into larger ones, no covering up windows that should have never been there in the first place, and no fancy window seats, Dutch doors, and no windows which become translucent when the sun goes down. However, it is very hard to explain to some of my friends and family why I’m getting new windows.

No doubt whoever won that $1.3 billion lottery will spend much of his/ her remaining time on earth pondering the “what if’s” of choosing such a long string of numbers in perfect order to hold the WINNING TICKET among the megamillions that weren’t. Oh, I know a few lesser winners cashed in, too, but most lottery participants held worthless pieces of cardboard, not unlike those who pick poorly at horse races.
Heavy rains through Texas last week caused flooding, particularly in the Dallas area, prompting Gov. Greg Abbott to issue a disaster declaration for 23 affected counties. Texans who were affected by the rain, which dumped more than 10 inches in Dallas, are encouraged to file insurance claims with their providers and to complete the voluntary Self Reporting Damage Survey issued by the Texas Department of Emergency Management by visiting damage.tdem. texas.gov. The survey helps the state identify damage across Texas to gain an understanding of what areas were affected during the recent severe weather.

Stephens County Commissioners approved the county’s budget and tax rate for the upcoming 2023 fiscal year during a public hearing held last Monday, Aug. 22. The fiscal year will begin Jan. 1, 2023.

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 1.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.40/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 46.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 58.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 6.3 cents in the last week and stands at $4.97 per gallon.
