Five Breckenridge Buckaroo athletes are heading to the state track meet. Sean Cooksey, Adrian Ruiz, Chase Lehr, Daniel Valdez and Sawyer Wimberley will represent Breckenridge at the 2022 UIL Track and Field State Championships on Thursday, May 12, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
The Buckaroos opens their 2022 season in a big way last week with an 8-0 shutout victory at home over Haskell. Five pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the five-inning victory.
Flavio Davila started the game on the mound for the Buckaroos and threw two strikeouts to open the game. The second strikeout took only three pitches. Davila finished the top half of the inning forcing a ground out to first base.

Shead joined the Steers for his first game of the season after recovering from an injury. His return was not enough as the Steers fell to Bucks at Graham High School, 66-39.
Dec. 20 was the third time the Steers and the Buckaroos met this season. The Bucks bested the Steers, 59-56, Nov. 30 at Breckenridge and again at the Breckenridge Tournament, 67-63.
The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) recently announced the Fall 2021 Academic All-District award recipients.
Breckenridge High School athletes earned seven honors across three different sports.
“Congrats to all of the Buckaroos who have earned THSCA Academic All-State Honors,” Casey Pearce, BISD Athletic Director, wrote.

The Breckenridge Buckaroos hosted the Graham Steers at the right time. Looking for their first win of the season, they hosted a young team still looking for its identity. The Buckaroos faced a team with a new coach, one freshman and four sophomores. Using suffocating defense in the first half and the 3-point-shot, the Buckaroos picked up their first win of the season Tuesday night, 62-56.
The immediate future looks bright for Breckenridge football. The 3-3A D1 All-District football teams were announced and include Buckaroos in 23 categories. This includes sophomores and juniors in 15 categories.
The All-District teams are announced when all four playoff teams have been eliminated from the playoffs. Jim Ned was the final team eliminated after a 70-25 loss to Brock last Friday, Nov. 26. Breckenridge and Wall lost in bi-district before Early lost in the area playoff.
The playoffs were already clinched. All that was left was to determine the seeding. With a 61-0 home win over the San Angelo TLCA Eagles, the Breckenridge Buckaroos are returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2018 as the second seed and will meet Whitesboro in the bi-district playoffs.
Touchdowns came early and often for the Buckaroos in Friday night’s win. A season-high 11 players were involved in nine touchdowns, including a return for a score.
The Breckenridge Buckaroos’ 2021 playoff chances briefly hit a wall Friday night. Needing one win to secure a playoff berth, the Buckaroos hosted the Wall Eagles. Unable to slow down the run game, the Buckaroos fell 29-26.
The Breckenridge Lady Bucks varsity volleyball team defeated the Nocona Lady Indians in three games Tuesday, Oct. 12, 25-23, 25-22, 25-16.
Jesi Warren led the team in kills with 15, and Lilly Woodward had 10. Woodward, Haylie Mendoza, and Destiny Jamison each had two blocks.
Haigan Thompson led the team in digs with 15, with Cara Schkade not far behind with 12. Charlie Salazar had 15 assists and Jimena Palacios ended the game with 13.
As a team, the Breckenridge Lady Bucks had 34 kills, eight blocks, 41 digs, and four aces.
