David Wilson Thompson, 89, of San Angelo, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 16. David was born June 9, 1933, in Breckenridge, to Jessie Sarah and David Ward Thompson. He went by “Wilson” throughout his school years and enjoyed being part of the champion Buckaroos football team at Breckenridge High School. He also ran track and played basketball.

On a football scholarship, he went to SMU and played football for the Colts and studied law. He graduated from SMU Law School in 1955. His plans of being a lawyer changed and he entered the United States Air Force to become a pilot.

In 1975, while stationed at Whiteman AFB in Missouri, he earned a Master of Science Degree in Safety Administration from nearby Central Missouri State University. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the military after serving his country for 28 years with 103 combat missions.

David was recognized for countless accomplishments during his service. A few of the most notable are the Air Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and Distinguished Flying Cross.

David and his wife, Doris, moved back to their hometown of Breckenridge where he served his community as a City Commissioner, the Treasurer and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and the President of the Beautify Breckenridge Association. They were long time members of the First Presbyterian Church. David was a ruling elder and taught the Bethany Bible class.

In their later years, moving closer to family brought them to San Angelo and they were part of the Village East Retirement Community.

David was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Doris Jean (Harris); his parents, Jessie and David Thompson of Breckenridge; and a brother, Sam Thompson of Albuquerque, N.M.

David is survived by his four daughters; Jeanie George (Bill) of Springfield, Mo., Linda Thompson of San Angelo, Patti Alderson of Golden, Colo., and Cindy Thompson of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

The family will hold a private graveside ceremony at the Breckenridge Cemetery, with the Reverend Andrew Channer officiating. Memorial donations may be made in David’s name to Breckenridge Meals on Wheels.
