Bucks split games in final week of season

The Buckaroos’ regular season came to an end last week with a pair of road games at Brock and Hawley.

During the district finale on the road at Brock, the Buckaroos lost 70-52 Tuesday, Feb. 13. With the season over and a week off until the bi-district playoff, the Buckaroos scheduled a “playoff warm-up” game against Hawley that took place Friday, Feb. 16.

Lady Bucks finish 1-5 at College Station tournament

The Lady Bucks took part in the first of three pre-district tournament Feb. 8-10 in college station. The team faced tough competition from larger schools to finish 1-5.

As a 4A school, the Lady Bucks took on Richland (5A), A&M Consolidated (5A), McKinney Boyd (6A), Houston MacArthur (6A), El Paso Eastlake (6A) and Southlake Carroll (6A).

Williams, Smalley named American’s Athletes of the Week

Beginning this week, the Breckenridge American will recognize two Breckenridge High School students as the American’s Athletes of the Week.

Athletes will be chosen with the assistance of Breckenridge ISD coaches based on factors that go beyond achievement on the field or court.

Aside from statistics, athletes who coaches deem to have stepped up in other ways including leadership or general team spirit will be considered as well.

Future features will include more stats from the previous week of games and comments from coaches.

Lady Bucks win season finale against Peaster

Although it was a difficult season in which the Lady Buckaroos missed the playoffs and experienced a mid-season coaching change, the team made the best of their challenge by sending its seniors out in style.

The Lady Buckaroos ended their season with three-straight wins, including a 60-28 senior night victory Tuesday, Feb. 6 over the Lady Greyhounds.

Buckaroos celebrate their seniors with home win

The Buckaroos played their final home game of the District 8-3A schedule Friday, Feb. 9 and celebrated their cast of four seniors with a blowout win.

By taking advantage of a 25-point first quarter, the Buckaroos never trailed and continued their first for second place in the district.

Seniors Camden Escalon and Karter Smalley scored five points in the game’s opening two minutes and the Buckaroos never looked back.

Lady Bucks earn final road win over Lady Longhorns

It took a first-half comeback, but the Lady Bucks competed and erased an 11-point deficit to claim an eight-point win for the final road game of the season. The Lady Bucks defeated the Lady Longhorns 50-42.

The Lady Bucks were hindered by a slow start to the game, which included only one field goal, a 3-pointer by Kaysi Wilcox with 5:30 on the clock. Mia Castillo converted on 1-of-2 free throws with 2:29 left in the first quarter for the final point for the Lady Bucks. The Lady Longhorns took advantage with 13 points in the first quarter.

BHS Powerlifting opens season with home meet

Buckaroo Powerlifting Meet opened the 2024 season last week. The meet, which was the first meet of the season took place Thursday, Feb. 1. In the boys’ competition 78 lifters competed and 59 lifters competed in the girls’ meet.

The Buckaroos took first overall with 57 points and had three lifters earn first-place finishes in their weight class. The Lady Bucks took second in the girls’ meet with 56 points. Four Lady Bucks finished first place in their weight classes.

UIL announces 2024-2026 Reclassification and Realignment

The UIL has announced its new conference and district alignments for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years. The realignment happens every two years.

While Breckenridge remained in 3A Division I for football and 3A for all other sports, the Buckaroos and Lady Bucks will experience slight changes in their districts.

The Buckaroos will play in District 3-3A Division I in football for the next two seasons. Participating in the district with the Bucks will be Clyde, Comanche, San Angelo Texas Leadership, Sweetwater and Jim Ned.
