Dr. Perry provides Breckenridge Rotary Club insight on COVID-19 pandemic

The Breckenridge Rotary Club received insight information on the COVID-19 virus from Dr. Cynthia Perry of the Resource Care Community Health Center.

Perry was the guest speaker during the club’s weekly meeting on Tuesday, June 9.

“I took care of two individuals of Breckenridge who had the COVID-19 virus,” Dr. Perry said. “One was hospitalized for oxygen, but he did very well and is currently doing well.”

Stephens County makes all businesses essential, opens to 100% occupancy

Stephens County commissioners passed a resolution reopening business to 100% occupancy and making all businesses essential, joining Eastland County as the second Texas county to do so.

The commissioners were joined by a host of citizens and Rep. Mike Lang, Republican state representative for District 60 during the Monday, June 8 county commissioners meeting. The outgoing representative provided insight and a rebuttal on Gov. Abbott’s executive orders.

Stephens County unemployment claims continue to increase

Unemployment claims filed in Stephens County has steadily increased in 2020 after a review of the Texas Workforce Commission.

Since mid-March, Stephens County has seen 339 individuals filing unemployment claims compared to 20 claims in 2019, according to a recent graph by TWC.

Deadline for Texas SBA Working Capital Loans approaches

Stephens County resident’s deadline to apply for the Small Business Administration federal disaster loan for economic injury will be Monday, July 6.

These low-interest loans are to offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought that began Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019.

Hash makes the Dean’s Honor Roll

Midwestern State University recognized 1,284 honor students for the Spring 2020 semester. The President’s Honor Roll included 477 students, the Provost’s Honor Roll included 361 students and the Dean’s Honor Roll included 446 students. Morgan Hash of Breckenridge, made the Dean’s Honor Roll. Hash is studying dental hygiene.

A student who completes a 12 hours in one semester with a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.74 and no grade lower than C will be included on the Dean’s Honor Roll. The student cannot have semester grades of I, WF or NC.

Stephens County confirms another COVID-19 case

Stephens Memorial Hospital officials have confirmed another positive case of the COVID-19 virus within the community.

The number of cases is now a total of five individuals who have tested positive for the virus with four individuals recovering.

Dr. Kelli Windsor, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at the Breckenridge Medical Center provided an update to Stephens County citizens via Facebook on the situation.

Passing the finish line

Although the COVID-19 pandemic halted many activities in Stephens County, the virus wasn’t able to stop the Breckenridge High school Class of 2020.

BHS celebrated the class Saturday, June 6, inside the newly renovated Buckaroos Stadium. Sitting six feet apart, students, parents, faculty and staff celebrated together on the accomplishments of the Breckenridge Buckaroos.

225 days without fall

Stephens Memorial Hospital celebrated 225 days without a patient fall for nurses and members of the SMH family. The hospital beat its previous record of 211 days and a celebration was held Wednesday, June 3 at the hospital.

Battle of the Badges

Stephens County Sheriff Will Holt donates blood during the 2020 Breckenridge Rotary Club Battle of the Badges. The competition pitted the Sheriffs Department against the Breckenridge Police and Fire Departments for bragging rights and a plaque on who donated the most blood in their name.
