Breckenridge City Commissioners met Tuesday, June 1 with one of the newest commissioners, Vince Moore taking charge of running the meeting, in the absence of Mayor Bob Sims.
Commissioners approved a change offered by the Planning and Zoning Committee, from a request by Billy Cook, who requested a zoning change from C-3 (general business) to MH (mobile home dwellings) for Section 7, Tract NE/4, for 6 acres in the Breckenridge city limits.
First and second graders from East Elementary took turns at the City Park and the National Theatre. Both groups had lunch at park and then went the theater to watch “The Incredibles.”
East Elementary took Wednesday to have their water day activities, with snow cones and lemonade.
South Elementary students had to wait on the morning rain to subside before they converged on the track for their relay races for third, fourth and fifth grade teams set to run.
The Stephens County Commissioners met Monday, May 26 and discussed several county contracts.
The county voted to approve the purchase of a new 2021 Chevrolet pickup, as requested by Sheriff Kevin Roach.
Sheriff Roach said a deputy had wrecked a vehicle, causing the department to be a vehicle short. The Stephens County Sheriff’s office is partnered with Buy Board, which is a procurement program. Two dealers were listed in the area and Stephens County Sheriff’s office was able to procure the truck at a discounted price.
Texas is set to become the 21st state to allow the lawful carry of a handgun, concealed or openly, without a license after the Senate and House approved the measure in the 87th Legislative Session.
House Bill 1927 was approved by the House Sunday, May 23, and approved by the Senate Monday, May 24. The bill was sent to the office of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott who stated he will sign off on the bill making it a law in the state. A final draft was negotiated with the house which made three changes to the bill approved by the Senate.
The Stephens County Commissioners will be sending letters of support to the West Texas Municipal Water District (WTMWD) for a proposed Peninsula RV Resort, requested by Brooke Hatchett.
Initial plans were submitted by Hatchett, in October 2020, for the Peninsula RV Resort to be located off FM 3099. Hatchett had asked for a ruling on an exemption or variance from the county’s subdivision rules.
Further investigation revealed that there were no rules for subdivisions in Stephens County. It was agreed that commissioners should develop subdivisions rules in the county.
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, a ceremony will be held on the west side of the Stephens County Courthouse lawn at 10 a.m. to honor 30 county veterans.
Breckenridge High School presented 113 scholarships, totaling $73,752, to 36 students, at their annual Scholarship Awards program in Bailey Auditorium Wednesday, May 19.
Valedictorian, Jonas Israel Arellano, received an award from First National Bank and Salutatorian, Evan James Moore, was recognized by Breckenridge InterBank.

Carter BloodCare will return to Breckenridge to host the Battle of the Badges blood drive, sponsored by Breckenridge Rotary Club. The event will be held Thursday, June 3 through Saturday, June 5.
The Carter BloodCare consultant, Coleen Horan, explained how dire the need was for donations of blood. In order to have enough blood on-hand for normal operations, they need 1,000 donors per day. Due to COVID, they now need 1,200 donors a day to replenish their supplies that have diminished alarmingly.

At the closing event of the year, the Breckenridge High School Band had their Band Banquet provided by the Pit Stop.
