Proposed sports booster project sparks discussion

The Breckenridge Independent School District Board of Trustees discussed the logistics behind applying a vinyl spirit banner to be wrapped around two recently purchased buses, raising concerns and questions from board members.

Breckenridge Mayor Jimmy McKay, who represented the sports booster club, donated the funds to purchase the vinyl. McKay presented to the board a design from Showtime Signs and Designs for the vinyl, as he described, containing bold volleyball scenes, drifting off into football and other sports, with ‘Breckenridge Buckaroos’ around the top.

Local woman thanks firefighters for saving home

A Stephens County woman credited swift action by the Breckenridge Fire Department and the Hubbard Creek Fire Department for saving her home from a Sunday night blaze that gutted a nearby property.

The Stephens County emergency personnel were dispatched to  the Breezy Point area around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night after a neighbor smelled smoke.

“I said, ‘I smell something burning,’” Mona Craig said. “[My husband] thought it was the furnace and I said ‘No, smell outside.’ He looked out and the fire was going next door.”

McDonald’s remains open while undergoing ‘Experience the Future’ remodel

The Breckenridge McDonald’s drive through will remain open as it undergoes remodeling as part of a corporate-wide ‘Experience the Future’ plan.

The restaurant’s tarp draped exterior seems to add to the intrigue of the remodel, which owner David Whealy believes will enhance customers’ dining experience.

“We’re putting in a kiosk that won’t take away from the front counter and it won’t cost jobs,” he said. “It actually takes a few more people because we’ll have table service.”

Justice of the Peace Michael Roach not seeking re-election

Stephens County Justice of the Peace Michael Roach announced he will not seek re-election once his term ends, but will serve out the remainder of his term.

In a letter sent to the Breckenridge American at 2:57 p.m. Thursday, Roach highlighted some of his career accomplishments before announcing he would not seek re-election.

Roach stated in his letter:

Serving as your elected Justice of the Peace has truly been an honor and a privilege. Working for you and through your unwavering support, many great things have been accomplished in this office.

Four hospitalized after multiple stabbings Friday night

A Breckenridge man remains in the Stephens County Jail on multiple felony charges after allegedly stabbing four people last Friday.

Ben Acosta, 34 of Breckenridge, awaits his first court appearance following two incidents last Friday night resulting in four Breckenridge citizens receiving treatment for stab wounds at area hospitals.

BISD creates committee to address dress code

The Breckenridge Independent School District Board of Directors President Jeff Dooley appointed a board sub-committee to review and make changes to current student dress code policies.

BISD Superintendent Tim Seymore, said the parent’s request for the board to consider an issue with the dress code prompted this discussion at the board’s meeting last month.

BPD officers arrest two alleged methamphetamine dealers

The Breckenridge Police Department spearheaded two investigations leading to the arrest of two alleged methamphetamine dealers.

Breckenridge Police Lieutenant Bacel Cantrell came into contact with both Roger Dale Norman Jr., 41 of Breckenridge, and Barbara Kay Horneck of Albany, in two separate incidents, which both led to arrests.

Urgent care clinic delayed, staff, procedures plans in place

The Stephens Memorial Hospital board may have delayed plans to open an urgent care/after hours clinic in 2017, but plans for the clinic became more concrete during last Thursday’s board meeting.

The urgent care/after hours clinic was originally planned to open sometime this month, but officials overseeing the project suggested the board push those plans back in order to have a strong foundation for when the clinic opens in 2018.

Beauchamp faces multiple child sexual assault charges

A 28-year-old Breckenridge man remains jailed on more than $300,000 bond following multiple charges related to child sexual assault.

Eric Beauchamp of Breckenridge is in Stephens County Jail on felony charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault, following an investigation by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office that began in late August.

Sloan Everett Memorial Bike Ride set for Saturday

The Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce will host the Sloan Everett Memorial Bike Ride and tree dedication starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. 

The tree dedication will take place at Miller Park, and will be located at the Disc Golf Pavilion, behind the American Legion building.

After the tree dedication ceremony, the bike ride segment will commence with three levels of participation.
