Everyone’s a winner at Johnny Bates Memorial

Golf enthusiasts from Breckenrige and beyond came out to play the links for a good cause as part of the Johnny Bates Memorial Scholarship Scramble.

Andy Channer and Carl Everett took first place in the first division, followed by Chris Heidelberg Aaron Brown (second),  Gary Anderson Sammy Fade (third)  and Cory Crenshaw and Billy Hitchock (fourth).

Thomas Tennison and Bryan Ringo took first in division two followed by Marvin and Kevin Chaney (second), Tommy and Easton Wolfe for (third) and Buck Fade and Jimmy Boster (fourth).

Snyder rallies back for four-set victory over Lady Bucks

The Breckenridge High School volleyball team overcame a deep deficit against Snyder, but could not maintain its momentum in the later sets, leading to a 3-1 loss Saturday. 

The Lady Tigers blistered Breckenridge 25-13 in the first set, but the Lady Buckaroos rallied  to take the second set 25-23 only to fall in the third and four sets 25-22 and 25-17 respectively.

“We weren’t really warm in the first set,” senior middle blocker Mackenna Moser said. “We knew we were better and we realized that and came out stronger in the second set.”

Lady Bucks XC take fourth at Glen Rose

Despite facing much larger schools, the Breckenridge High School girls cross country team finished fourth at the Glen Rose Invitational while the boys finished 11th.

The Lady Buckaroos took fourth after junior Mawnika Wright and freshman Riegan Robertson finished just seconds apart at 14th (12:56) and 15th (13:01) respectively. 

Robertson and Wright each shaved a few seconds from their times at the Perkins Scout Camp Cross Country Classic in Burkburnett.

Untimely turnovers lead to 41-20 victory for Mineral Wells

Turnovers made all of the difference last Friday as the Breckenridge High School football team suffered its second loss in a 41-20 drubbing by the Mineral Wells Rams.

The Rams took advantage early in the first quarter with an 8-yard touchdown pass after a muffed Buckaroos’ punt return put them inside the red zone on what would have been Breckenridge’s first offensive possession; and the Bucks’ woes continued to build from there.

XC runners surprise at Burkburnett

The Breckenridge High School Cross Country Team seems to have picked up a bit of steam with a solid performance at the Perkins Scout Camp Cross Country Classic.

The boys finished in third place with a team score 96 while the girls finished fourth with a team score of 91.

Weekend win a sign of progress for Lady Bucks

The Breckenridge High School volleyball team’s steady approach to improving seems to have paid off following Saturday’s four-set victory over Jim Ned.

The Lady Buckaroos bested the Lady Indians 25-19, 19-25, 25-21 and 25-21 in a best of five series that avenged a previous loss at the Lu Allen Classic in Graham.

“They made mistakes and I knew they would,” Breckenridge coach Jeana Yarbrough said. “We made a few mistakes on our side, which were just silly errors, but not as many. What I was proud of the most was serving.”

Buckaroos fall despite strong defense

The Breckenridge High School football team began its season with a loss after falling to Cisco 20-6.

The Buckaroos’ recently implemented offense came to life early but failed to capitalize until the fourth quarter.

“It wasn’t a great night for us, but there are a lot of good things that happened,” Breckenridge coach Casey Hubble said. “We’ll evaluate the video. I told the kids ‘We’re fighters, I know we’re fighters. We’re just going to have to be smarter and to beat good teams — consistent, deep-playoff teams, like Cisco — then we’re just going to have to get better.”

Lady Buckaroos rest, refocus after Graham loss

The Breckenridge High School Volleyball Team took spent last week recuperating from a tough front end of its pre-district schedule.

The Lady Buckaroos took a break away from action following last Tuesday’s three-set loss to the undefeated Graham Lady Blues (25-11, 25-8, 25-10), which allowed them to refocus before facing a host of potential state championship contenders in the next few weeks.

Cross country runners sweep Santos Relay

SANTO— The Breckenridge High School Cross Country Team seems primed for a breakout season after sweeping the competition during its only preseason event.

The Buckaroos and Lady Buckaroos finished first in all categories Saturday during the Santos Relay, which Breckenridge coach Kim Dieterich believes is an encouraging sign for the upcoming season.

Bucks kickoff football season Friday

The high school football season begins Friday with Breckenridge hosting the 10th-ranked Cisco Lobos.

The Buckaroos have fallen to Cisco three years in a row, but after scoring four touchdowns against Early before lightning canceled the Bucks’ final scrimmage of the preseason.
