Grease trap ordinance could mean restaurant, manufacturer fines

The Breckenridge City Commission took the first steps in insure clean sewerlines with passage of a grease trap ordinance earlier this month.

The ordinance requires applicable facilities to install, use and maintain grease traps or interceptors, prohibits discharging of excessive fats, oils and dressings into the city’s sewer system and provides civil penalties for related violations. 

County adopts roads, avoids limited access to subdivisions

The Stephens County Commissioners Court faced the options either  adopting roads previously managed by West Central Texas Municipal Water District or potential limited access to neighborhoods near Hubbard Creek Lake.

The court unanimously approved taking responsibility of two roads near Hubbard Creek, Water District Road 274 and Water District Road 277. Chris Wingert, water district general manager, said would face the possibility of being shut down, which would limit access to the Holiday Hills, Breezy Point and North Cove subdivisions

Men survive warbird crash

Two men were injured Tuesday morning when a vintage war plane crashed in a pasture near the Stephens County Airport.

The crash of a CSEA Seafury British Hawker was reported around 9:15 a.m. It landed in a pasture north of the airport and south of FM 2231, land owned by Brad Whitaker.

The plane’s occupants, Nelson Ezell and Dustin Mayfield, were taken by helicopter ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Forth Worth. 

Ezell sustained serious but not critical injuries, while Mayfield’s injuries were less serious, according to the men’s wives.

SMH Auxiliary raises funds for hospital needs

The Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary members are always involved in identifying the needs of the hospital and evaluating how they can be the most helpful. Their fundraisers have purchased many needs of the SMH and the latest item is the Vein Viewer for the SMH Lab. 

The recent raffle of the Char Broil Grill, $500 worth of groceries from United Supermarkets and a set of RADA Steak Knives raised more than $4,000 toward the purchase of the Vein Viewer, at a cost of $5,000.

Breckenridge FD grant purchases $223,000 tanker truck

The Breckenridge Fire Department added to its fleet a new, $223,000 tanker truck, which pulled into town Monday morning following a 10-hour trip from Beaumont.

During Monday morning’s Stephens County Commissioners meeting, commissioners finalized a nearly four-year process that began with the application for a grant through the Texas Forest Service, which paid for 90 percent of the cost of the truck.

No charges filed after puppies found shot

An investigation by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office into four puppies found dead with gunshot wounds will not result in any criminal charges.

Kevin Roach, a SCSO deputy, began an investigation Monday after discovering the puppies strewn across a gravel road. He eventually found the person believed responsible, but Sheriff Will Holt said no charges were filed because under state law, a crime was not committed.

Salute in the Salts to celebrate Independence Day

Editor’s note: Due to the holiday, the Breckenridge American published a day earlier than usual, which allowed us to remind you of upcoming July 4 events even though the newspaper’s official print date is after the holiday. 

Although Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce officials canceled this year’s Boomfest fireworks show to make room for the return of the air show, Canyon Road Barn and Grill decided to step up and put on a show of its own with Salute in the Salt Flats.

Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony held at Walker Sayle Unit

Stephens County and Breckenridge law enforcement and government officials joined employees of the TDCJ Walker Sayle Unit Thursday morning for a memorial ceremony to honor fallen correctional officers.  The event was part of National Correctional Officer Week.  

Near the stage, set up under a large tent on the prison grounds, was a small round table called the “Missing Officer” table and an empty chair.  Displayed on the table were several items that symbolized the “Missing Officer."

Local men arrested for Abilene robbery

Two men from Breckenridge were arrested on Monday in Abilene in connection of the robbery of an Abilene man.

Breckenridge Police Chief Larry Mahan said Eric Lang, 21 and Toby Scurlock, 19 stole a car in Breckenridge on April 25 and drove it to Abilene. Then, according to Abilene police the men robbed a 19 year-old man of $2000 at the Sedona Apartments by holding him down and choking him inside an apartment.

United Supermarkets to begin remodel of Cashsavers

The Breckenridge Cashsaver grocery on West Walker will close on at 9 p.m. on Sunday, and renovations will begin to convert it into a United Supermarket.  

According to a statement from United Supermarkets on Thursday, the Lawrence Bros. location in Breckenridge will be closed for three days, beginning Monday, May 2, to complete the conversion and remodel of the store, as a result of the recent acquisition. The store will reopen on Thursday, May 5, as a United Supermarkets following extensive changes, including a robust refresh of many store departments.
