Bucks continue hot start to the season

The Breckenridge varsity baseball team dominated Hawley, 10-0, on March 3 at the Buckaroos’ baseball stadium.

The bats were on fire early for the Bucks, with a man on first and second base. The next batter, Jake Escalon had a grand opportunity to give the Buckaroos a lead with a runner in scoring position.

Buckaroos name Pearce as new AD, Head Coach

Breckenridge ISD announced Casey Pearce as the new athletic director and head football coach on Friday, March 6 inside the BISD Administration Building.

Pearce is a graduate of Breckenridge High School Class of 1993 and was the defensive coordinator for the Longview Lobos during their Class 6A, Division II state championship.

“What an opportunity, attempting to make changes and bring things back,” Casey Pearce said. “This place means a lot and I wouldn’t have the success and opportunities without this place.”

Breckenridge Buckaroos season ends in overtime heartbreak

The Breckenridge Buckaroos varsity basketball team’s journey to the playoffs came to an end after a gut wrenching loss, in overtime, to City View, 64-73, on Tuesday, Feb. 25 inside the Olney High School gym.

The Bucks were down 53-61 with just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Spring is in the air

Sports require hard work and skill, but whatever other athletes may tell you, track is not easy. Track and field athletes push themselves harder, longer and better at every practice.

“We have 38 kids this year,” boys track head coach Mark Young said, “They come to track every day ready to work. We are building this year, but I expect great things.”

Buckaroos 2-0 after weekend victories

The Breckenridge Buckaroos varsity baseball team opened the season with two victories on Saturday, Feb. 29 in Bangs.

The Buckaroos won the first contest, 5-4, over the Jim Ned Indians.

Breckenridge: Bi-district playoff review

Breckenridge (24-6, 10-3) placed third in District 7 ranking 340 in the state. Their opponent, City View (19-9, 6-4) representing District 8, was runner up and ranked 383. The City View Mustangs averages 55.7 points per game. Their go-to guy is junior J. Lucas, averaging 14.4 points per game. He is partial to the 3-pointer with 67 makes. Thus far, he has score 303 points this year.

Their next go-to guy is senior J. Marks, averaging 9.1 points per game. He has tallied 172 points, so far.

Breckenridge student-athletes chosen for FCA All-Star Festival

Breckenridge ISD has seven student-athletes, out of more than 320 selected, to compete in the Big Country Chevy Dealers 2020 FCA All-Star Festival.

The area’s top athletes, representing 71 high schools, were chosen for football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf and cheerleading.

Owen Woodward will represent Breckenridge on the Red football team at the Myrle Greathouse All-Star Football Classic. The event will be held at Shotwell Stadium, in Abilene, on Saturday, June 13.

Baseball returns in Breck

The Breckenridge High School varsity baseball team will begin the season highly ranked, after being ranked #2 in the 2020 preseason 3A rankings. The team is returning nine starters from a 31-5 regional semi-finalist team.

The Bucks hosted Stamford in a scrimmage Saturday and the two teams competed at a high level.

The highlight from the scrimmage occurred when a Breckenridge batter crushed a ball deep into left field. The play resulted in a stand-up double.

District realignment and the Buckaroos

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has released its realignment for the district around the state for the next two years. The adjustment will see the Breckenridge Buckaroos basketball and volleyball teams continue in Conference 3A District 7.

The team will see new competition from five teams as Jacksboro and Breckenridge will be the only teams remaining in the district.

Breckenridge Buckaroos cage Tigers on Senior Night

The Breckenridge Buckaroos improved to 24-5 on the season after beating the Jacksboro Tigers, 71-44, last Friday, Feb. 14 at home.

The game began at a competitive rate. Well-designed plays scored consecutive baskets for the Bucks, as Gerardo Palacios and Owen Woodward put the team up 4-1, early in the first quarter.

After ending the first quarter tied 16-16, the Buckaroos went on a 23-5 run and by the end of the second quarter, the Buckaroos were leading 39-23.
