Hubble accepts new position at Canton

After six seasons with the Buckaroos, Casey Hubble has accepted a position as athletic director and head football coach with Canton Independent School District.

According to the Canton Herald, the district’s superintendent introduced Hubble as the new athletic director and head football coach, during a special called meeting of Canton ISD school board, held Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Buzzer beaters, defense propel Lady Bucks past Panthers on Senior Night

In a back and forth contest, the Lady Bucks started slow, but finished strong and defeated the Paradise Panthers 48-40 last Friday at home.

Down 11-5 in the early minutes of the first quarter, Coach Chris Robertson of the Breckenridge Lady Buckaroos called the team’s first timeout to refocus the squad.

After the time out, the three-pointers started to go down for the Lady Bucks. Breckenridge’s Nayeli Hernandez and Lexi Shield pulled the team back into the game and brought the score 12-12 by the end of the first quarter.

Bucks rout Panthers to clinch a playoff spot

The Buckaroos improved to 23-5 on the season after beating the Paradise Panther 88-51 last Friday at home.

The team jumped out with two quick three-pointers and an easy layup for an 8-0 lead. This was a part of 17-4 run the team went on early in the first quarter.

The Panthers fought back and went on a 10-4 run to bring the game close and get the score to 21-14 by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Bucks open up a large lead by playing good defense and nailing midrange and beyond the arch shots.

Youth movement powers Buckaroos basketball

Nearing the end of his fourth season as head basketball coach of the Breckenridge Buckaroos, Colby Hartfield has made a name for himself during his first few years. Unlike most high school coaches in the country, Hartfield is a 26-year-old African American male.

Hartfield was 16-years-old when his family moved to Breckenridge. Graduating from Breckenridge High School in 2011, Hartfield was a first-team all-district selection during his senior year. After graduating, he moved on to study math at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.

Lady Buckaroos edge Yellowjackets for 20th win

The Lady Bucks improved to 20 wins on the season after holding on to defeat the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets, 58-56, last Friday at home.

The game came down to the final seconds, but the Lady Bucks held on for the victory.

 “We had to keep (Boyd’s) Peytin Bullard off the paint,” Breckenridge Lady Bucks coach, Chris Robertson, said. “She is a great player. We needed to keep her going east and west instead of north and south.”

Breckenridge Buckaroos make quick work of Boyd Yellowjackets

The Buckaroos started fast, finished strong and defeated the Boyd Yellowjackets 48-38 last Friday at home.

From the opening tip, the Buckaroos were in firm control of this contest. They jumped out to a 14-4 lead to end the first quarter. The lead was due to the quick start from Aaryn Medina, Kyle Canada and Gerardo Palacios.

“Kyle Canada was huge for us tonight,” Breckenridge basketball coach, Colby Hartfield, said. “He made some outside shots, took a few charges and made a layup late in the game so he was huge tonight. When he plays well we’re really hard to beat.”

Bucks taken down in 4th by Peaster

It was head-to-head between two strong forces, the Breckenridge Buckaroos and the Peaster Greyhounds last Friday at home. But is was the dominating hot streak in the fourth quarter when Breckenridge lost grips against the Greyhounds with a 60-82 loss.

Lady Bucks trampled by Lady Greyhounds

While it was the Lady Bucks to start things off last Friday night at home court, it was the Peaster Lady Greyhounds who took ownership with an undeniable win 39-68.

Breckenridge was the first to put points on the board leading for the first three minutes of the game, 7-5. However, Peaster tuned in finding their niche and broke away with a 10-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bucks had countless errors on offense. Adding the number of turnovers made it easier for the Lady Greyhounds to take an 11-point lead.

Bryson wins battle of Cowboys

Bryson junior Zander Tinney had his teammates talking before their Friday game with Woodson even started.

Tinney, the Cowboys’ leading scorer, was ready for his first dunk of the season. While the opportunity did not present itself during the visitors’ 47-22 win over the host Cowboys, Tinney finished the job afterwards as his coach was giving postgame interviews.

Woodson girls fall to Bryson

WOODSON — It’s not often you shoot 22% from the field in a game and win.

Such was the case for Bryson’s girls basketball team Friday night, Jan. 24, as the Bryson Cowgirls overcame a double-digit deficit at halftime and turned it around with a third quarter with a comeback. The visitors ended the first round of district play with a 42-28 victory over the host Woodson Cowgirls.
