Thanksgiving travelers opting to stay home

The Thanksgiving travel season will be notably different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. GasBuddy, the travel and navigation app used by more North American drivers to save money on gas, has released its 2020 Annual Thanksgiving Travel Survey, finding that only 35% of Americans will be taking to the roads this year, a decrease from 65% from last year, amidst some of the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices the country has seen in years.

The Breckenridge Woman’s Forum met on Tuesday, Nov. 11, with a program presented by Kay Walton, an artist, who spoke about “The Providence Forum.” Their mission is to “Preserve, defend and advance the faith of the Judeo-Christian values of our nation’s Founding Fathers.

The Flower of Remembrance

This was the poem written by World War I Colonel John McCrae, a surgeon with Canada’s First Brigade Artillery. It expressed McCrae’s grief over the “row on row” of graves of soldiers who had died on Flanders’ battlefields, located in a region of western Belgium and northern France. The poem presented a striking image of the bright red flowers blooming among the rows of white crosses and became a rallying cry to all who fought in the First World War. The first printed version of it reportedly was in December 1915, in the British magazine Punch.

Nancy Taylor retired from the Law Enforcement Center after a total of 29 years. She served Stephens County as an Adult Probation Officer for 25 years and then was the Office Manager for the Stephens County Sheriff’s office during the last four years.

Calendar of Events

Wednesday, Nov. 11 - Veteran’s Day celebration at 9 a.m. in the Breckenridge Athletic and Fine Arts Facility - All Veterans and families are invited. Veterans will be escorted in on the main floor. Families may be seated in bleachers among students from Breckenridge ISD.
