Cross country runners sweep Santos Relay

SANTO— The Breckenridge High School Cross Country Team seems primed for a breakout season after sweeping the competition during its only preseason event.

The Buckaroos and Lady Buckaroos finished first in all categories Saturday during the Santos Relay, which Breckenridge coach Kim Dieterich believes is an encouraging sign for the upcoming season.

Lady Buckaroos perform well against high-level teams

The Breckenridge High School Volleyball Team return from scrimmaging multiple teams over the weekend, hoping their momentum will bring regular season success Tuesday.

The Lady Buckaroos wrapped up the preseason with scrimmages against perennial powerhouses Nocona and Archer City, among others, then faced Albany and Munday Saturday, who Breckenridge coach Jeana Yarbrough said posed a challenge despite being much smaller schools.

New offense has Buckaroos senior receivers excited

The Breckenridge High School football team returned to the practice field for the first time this season, spending much of the time working on its new spread offense.

The Buckaroos spent much of the second round of their first two-a-day practice working on their spread offense, which has senior receivers Lonnie Hinson and Terrance Roberson excited to run it during their  Aug. 18 scrimmage against Jacksboro.

Buckaroos enter final phase of offseason

Members of the Breckenridge High School football team hope to get the most of their final weeks of offseason conditioning.

The Buckaroos returned to the gym following the fourth of July holiday and will have just a few weeks before the first day of two-a-day practices.

“We’re a big weight room team, we live in there,” Breckenridge football coach and athletic director Casey Hubble said. “We’re not about strength as much as we are building explosive power. We want functional movement and speed. We’re constantly trying to gain an edge.”

Buckaroos dominate district picks

Despite having two district rivals make it to the regional finals in the baseball state playoffs, the Breckenridge High School Baseball Team still managed to most of its starting lineup receive district honors.

Although making the postseason is often reward enough, senior Hunter Petty and freshmen Jake Escalon and Owen Woodward each received top honors in district selections with five other players being recognized following a postseason meeting in June.

Lady Bucks win big in opening game of playoffs

Around this time last year,  the Breckenridge Lady Buckaroos were making their first playoff appearance since 2010 and were happy to be in the Class 3A playoffs.

This year, the Lady Bucks are looking to do something special and if Thursday night’s 13-2 Bi-District win over the Comanche Maidens was a sign of things to come, Breckenridge softball fans will have plenty to cheer about in the coming weeks.
Thursday’s win was the first of a best of three game series against Comanche with game two being played at 6 p.m. Saturday at Abilene Christian University.
