The Buck’s Varsity and JV Track teams went to the Eastland Meet during Spring Break on a voluntary basis. The Varsity boys placed fourth behind Cisco, Eastland and Albany. The JV boys finished second behind Eastland.
The Lady Bucks fought back in the sixth inning with five runs, but it was just too late to make up the deficit against the City View Lady Mustangs, who led (3-10) at the beginning of the sixth inning. The Lady Mustangs collected three more runs at the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead, (8-13). The Lady Bucks had the top of the 7th inning to collect more runs, but were just out of gas and went down, (8-13).
Prior to the Bucks Varsity game, the Bucks JV squared off against the Bearcats JV team from Henrietta. BHS alumni, Jake Escalon, was behind the catcher at home plate calling the game. His baptism under fire came on the very first pitch which hit his shoulder. For those who don’t know, Jake was the catcher for the Bucks and now plays baseball at Tarleton State Univ. Escalon Field, where the Bucks play, was named after his grandfather, Dee Escalon, who coached many little Bucks over a few decades.
The Lady Bucks JV played the Lady Cubs from Olney since Henrietta did not have a JV team. The Lady Bucks JV quickly dispensed with the challengers in the top of the first inning with two strikeouts by pitcher Jady Gonzalez and an easy out by the JV, at second, by the second batter, who had a walk.
The Bucks squared off against the Henrietta Bearcats and defeated them 7-0 after a five-run start in the first inning. The Bucks were anxious to hit the reset button after the loss Monday, March 15, to the Holliday Eagles 1-11.
The Lady Bucks forgot their game plan from the Nocona game Friday, March 5, which they won (11-1) and lost another game that they could have won in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, the Lady Bucks lost this one (1-4) in front of the home crowd.
The Lady Bucks ran into a buzzsaw in their second District 7-3A game and were defeated 1-11 by the Holliday Lady Eagles. The Lady Bucks mustered up one run in the first inning before the Lady Eagles took control of the game.
Jonas Arellano and Jerry Lawson were selected First Team All-District for District 7-3A. Honorable Mention includes Jayton Hash, Anson Rodgers, Nathan Lechner and Zeke Castillo.
The Lady Bucks Varsity track team traveled to the Hamlin Meet Saturday, March 13. The team garnered 76 points to place fifth overall. Coach Blair Magee reported the results.
