BJHS football wraps up seasons with losses

The junior high school football season came to an end last Thursday with each Breckenridge team falling to Brock.

The combo team came closest to victory Thursday after falling just a few yards shy of having an opportunity to tie the game on a 2-point conversion after going down 8 points before halftime.

Quarterback Allan McDaniel found receiver Christan Goswick for a 25-yard gain and found him again with precious seconds ticking away, but Goswick could not reach the end zone in time, resulting in a 14-6 loss. 

Buckaroos knock off Brock for district championship (full story)

The Breckenridge High School Buckaroos pulled off arguably the most surprising regular season upset in school history after knocking off 2016 state runner-up Brock, thanks to a field goal by senior kicker Jose Escobedo in the final seconds of regulation.

The Buckaroos won their first district title in 12 years after Escobedo split the uprights with 6 seconds left in regulation, then junior corner back Kevin Franco sealed the victory with an interception during the Brock Eagles’ final offensive possession.

Bucks’ win sets up district championship showdown Friday

PONDER— The Breckenridge High School Buckaroos will host Brock for the 3A District 4 championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday after trouncing Ponder 43-7 to set up the district title showdown.

Senior running back Zach Willis put the Bucks on the scoreboard just seconds in to regulation after returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, and scored four more TDs while rushing for nearly 200 yards, during a 43-7 rout last Friday.

Volleyball Buckaroos honored with district offensive MVP and other awards

Although the high school volleyball season ended for the Lady Buckaroos more than a week ago, the accolades continue rolling in.

During a postseason 3A Region 1 District 6 meeting, officials named sophomore middle blocker Madison Stanley as offensive player of the year, sophomore setter Kinley Kanady newcomer of the year and standout senior MaKenna Moser made first-team all district.

JV Bucks wrap the season against Brock

Although the varsity Breckenridge High School football team recently cracked the top 10 list of the Texas Association of Coaches poll, the junior varsity has been on point all season.

The junior varsity Buckaroos will wrap up their season Thursday on the road versus Brock, hoping to end their season with an 8-2 record before they begin joining their varsity peers in practice during the post season.

“We’ve been on a roll right now at the JV level,” Breckenridge offensive assistant Colby Hartfield said. “We’ve won six in a row and we’re putting up a lot of points.”

Lady Bucks pick up first win

The Breckenridge High School girls basketball team opened the season with a 48-38 victory over Ranger last Saturday.

Chris Robertson picked up his first win as Lady Buckaroos’ coach after his team trailed by a bucket at halftime only to explode in the second half, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs by a 12-point margin.

“With as young as we are, and only having a couple of returners with varsity experience, it was just mindset and confidence. Now they have one under their belt,” Robertson said.

Lady Buckaroos end season after falling in five-set playoff thriller

ABILENE— The Breckenridge High School volleyball team’s season came to an end after the Lady Buckaroos fell to Jim Ned in five sets.

Facing an early sweep after falling in the first two sets 26-24 and 25-22, Breckenridge coach Jeana Yarbrough said her Lady Buckaroos mounted one of the greatest comebacks she’s seen all season, taking the next two sets 25-16 and 25-21 only to fall in the fifth set 15-11.

Bucks roll past Boyd 49-14 (full story)

BOYD— The Breckenridge Buckaroos made their journey to a potential high school state championship a little easier after securing at least a share of second place in the 3A District 4 standings, following a 49-14 victory over Boyd Friday night.

 The Buckaroos cruised to a 49-14 win by taking advantage of their field position, thanks to some timely turnovers by the defense, and quickly put the game out of reach after going into halftime up 27-0.

Breckenridge Cross Country season comes to an end

The Breckenridge High School cross country season came to an end Monday with the Lady Buckaroos finishing 17th out of 24 teams competing at the UIL Region 1 Meet.

Junior Mawnika Walker finished first among all Breckenridge runners with a time of 14:50 for 39th out of 175 competitors Monday afternoon, which was nearly a minute from the time posted by regional champion Sydney Bowman of Ballinger. 

Lady Bucks playoff bound after Eastland win

EASTLAND— The Breckenridge High School volleyball team secured a playoff spot with its four-set (18-25, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-18) victory over Eastland Saturday and will need a little help Tuesday night for a chance to play for a district championship.

The Lady Buckaroos will face Jim Ned (7-21) Monday, at 6:30 p.m., inside Abilene High School, in the opening round of the 3A playoffs unless the Early Lady Longhorns can pull an upset over Comanche Tuesday night.
